Can a Pocket Wizard be used to remote trigger a Nikon D80 shutter?

Why dont you just trigger the shutter with a wireless remote? You can pick one up on eBay relatively cheap. Or are you trying to do something more advance like take a picture with two cameras?

Yes, but you will have to get the right cable.

Because I have a pair of expensive and reliable PW's, and would prefer to use them over yet another piece of hardware.

Also, the wireless uses IR and has distance and orientation limitations such as having to be in front of the camera.

PW's site mentioned cables for some Nikon models, but not the D80.

I dont have PW's so please excuse me if I sound ignorant but wouldnt you need three PW's to do this? One for your flash, one for your camera, and one to remotely fire everything? I'm guessing that cord is going to cost a whole lot more than a wireless or corded shutter release. Please excuse me if my answer is wrong. As Im answering the question I'm also gathering insight or your setup as well.

I would not be concerned about triggering flashes.

This would be for applications like shooting fireworks.

I am using the Canon version of the Pocket Wizard cable, works well, by the way the camera can still fire the flash so only need the transmitter and receiver with the custom PW cable.

I would think so but you'll need a cable release to plug the PW into the camera and a second PW that you will hold in your hand and a third if you want to trigger a flash. I did this on a canon setting up my tripod right next to a humming bird feeder for a close up of humming birds.

Because the D80 is new, or because it is different?

I am thinking new.

August 2006 is not very new in the DSLR world!

That would be about 50 in "human years".

I think not. The PW Nikon cable is the Nikon 10 pin connector as in this Nikon release.

The D80 uses this remote with a different connector.

I don't know of another PW Nikon cord

It is definitely a different cable.  I have seen them advertised on the web before, but I haven't been able to find the listing.  I don't think PW offers it.  It will work though, you just have to hunt down the cable.

Actually the camera will trigger the flash on the "hot shoe" or by an "off camera flash cable" or use a PC cable connected between the flash and camera, much less expensive than a third PW.
