I'm going to be traveling and want to take my porty with me on the airplane.  What travel cases do you use?  Do you check them or have you ever taken it on the plane with you?  Thanks.

I've flown my lights in a Pelican case several times.  The "throwers" haven't been able to damage the lights yet.

The pelican cases are tough bastards, and if you carefully fit the foam around your equipment, they'd just about have to roll the plane over it to do any real damage.

Get insurance on your stuff anyway though.

No problems staying within the weight limit?

Well, of course that depends on how heavy your setup is.  Your Hensel pack and heads are probably pretty heavy.  I'm using a Pelican 1620, which I think is almost 20 lbs by itself.  I can carry two AB lights plus the AB ringlight in it with a bunch of accessories and it's right around 47-48 lbs.  So it works fine and I don't end up paying the overweight charges.

This is one of those times where the Alien Bees lightweight construction pays off, I suppose.

Just looked it up on B&H photo:

They've got the weight listed at a whopping 26 lbs.  That may be the "shipping" weight including whatever packaging the case is in.  If you're really interested, I can weigh mine.  Sucks to eat up so much of the available limit with just the case, but anything tough enough to protect your equipment is going to have some heft to it.

Just looked at the Porty:

They've got the weight at 39lbs, but again that might be the shipping weight.  OOF!

I pay extra per bag and for extra luggage on most any flight, its amusing to me that you are all trying to figure out a way to avoid a 25$ charge for thousands of dollars of equipment.  Pay it, get it on an safe and have fun.  Beats rental fees on location.

I generally en up with 5 bags checked an the lightest comes in 25lbs over the heaviest I try to be no more than 100lbs.  Whole bill is under 200$ extra, no big deal, I get to not worry about how much I bring or how well its packed.

Verify that as well, most airlines have a 50lb limit and a fee for anything over, even a pound so if you are 51 might as well go to the next limit.  Than find out what is an extra bag charge, sometimes that works out to be cheaper in the end.  Or bring assistants and send their clothes ahead, so they can take only your crap onboard,  thats what I do when I need to bring a lot of stuff.  smile

Greetings,

For my Hensel Porty Premium I use the Tenba Wheeled Air Case when when traveling by Air. I'm very happy with the Tenba Air case.

Fully packed it is over the 50 lb. limit so I'm charged extra.
For the same excess weight United Air charged me $50, while Delta charged me $80.

Cheers!

Well, just one other - and more important - question for me: What do you do with the battery? Do you leave it in the Porty, or do you store it outside? I heard that you're not allowed to keep electronic devices operatable, so that it could not switch on itself by accident?

Any experiences?
