Sad. I'm not surprised at the STORY but this startled me: "Elite Model Management, which discovered Naomi Campbell, has only two black models. Its Paris agency says there is not enough work for more black models because people do not like to see black women." I'm surprised someone from Elite would admit such a thing to a reporter.

The. Fuck. I know some people feel this way but for an agent to SAY that to a reporter?! This is wild. Really sad stuff. They only have two black models but how many minority/women of color do they have?

this is so sad though it is not just modeling I used to work at a college in student activities and we had to have diversity events regularly to educate people on things such as this and other like this that have happened over history Rachel

I'm not surprised, maybe it was bad English, maybe it was a bad translation, or maybe they really meant it that way. I have no idea about France and it's customs or anything going on over there.

Remember, this is an industry that contributes to lethal eating disorders, child labor sweatshops, animal abuse and the dreaded ANTM with no apologies. Also, if that's the way the market is, then that's the way the market is. It's not Elite's fault that there isn't more of a demand for black models. I think that's simply what they are saying. The Eastern European giant malnourished female look is what seems to be "in" right now (and has been for a while). That right there excludes 99% of the models on MM. Daniel

Here we go again. Some activist picks up the cudgel to bite the hand that feeds her, the activist media pile on (did anyone notice which publication this stuff appears in? Want to bet on their objectivity on the issue?) and everyone acts like this is the first time they ever heard it. And also act like the issues have never been discussed, and are not understood. Simplistic answers are trotted out as though they actually made sense. What we see all too little of is honesty in this conversation. Certainly there is no reward for it. Just once I'd like to see a real, honest discussion of these issues, but today certainly will not be the day.

Well let's see, Their clients aren't into black models for their work/products/ideas what have you. Because, the public in their area or target market isn't supporting black models for goods/services/whatnot that they want to buy. I may have it backwards but the public drives marketing which drives agencies and so on. So which is worse? Not signing many black models for that market, or signing them but knowing they won't find any work? Just throwing it out there - and I'm bored.

it pretty much goes back to what my grandma is always saying... "white people have the devil in them." if barack obama doesn't get elected president i'm gunna start burning some sh*t down. but, i'm going to do it smart, unlike some of the riots of the past, i'm going to start in somebody elses neighborhood.

That is, in fact, the conundrum that agencies typically face, and also the reason why agencies which specialize in black models typically cannot succeed outside of a very narrow range. Agencies are businesses; so are models. If the work isn't there for a class of people (any class of people), then having them in large numbers in the agencies doesn't do anybody any good.

Wha WHat? You have to be kidding.... This article is really sad, and disturbing and a terrible injustice, but I'm pretty sure encouraging destruction and more hate is not what Obama stands for...

I have photographed about 10 females from Model Mayhem. Twelve made appointments. One model (white) called to cancel. Bogus excuse but she did call. Another model (black) just plain didn't show up, didn't call, didn't do anything. I called her and got a bogus excuse. The other ten (all white) showed up on time, were a pleasure to work with, etc. Can any of you tell me who I'd rather work with? Can any of you tell me I'm being "racist" (such an overused word these days) for not wanting shoot black females. I have shot many and have enjoyed working with them. I have been in business for over 24 years and I will honestly say the majority of my no shows, probably 95% have been black.

You get a special spot in heaven because this industry is about making money, and your ethnic group doesn't sell? The fact that you believe that says more about you than it does about the industry. That's like saying that the fact that 70% of the NBA is black is blatant racism against whites.
