I pass on this note from Michael Grecco, world-famous celebrity photography. And less well-known but much admired for his work, unpaid, in advocating photographer rights. The fraudulently-named "Orphan Works" bill would gut copyright, enable and encourage massive theft of photos, and take away deterrance to piracy. It even proposes a "2nd Registration, privately-run, designed to force photographers to register their images TWICE." Possibly in a registry run by Google, the biggest infringer of all. And those are only a few of the bad things. It's easy to be heard, see letter below.

Your Colleague,
J.

Dear [colleagues],

I write to you as a colleague concerned about the Orphan Works situation in Congress. I have been following this issue for several years and urge you to email, fax and call your Senators and Congress person to ask them to vote no on both the House of Representatives bill and the Senate bill. Both bills are way to broad and seriously limit an artist's right to protect their own work. Even the House bill, which is being touted as the better bill, puts the onus on the artist to register their images twice, with the Copyright Office and with a newly developed Orphan Works registry, in order to not be considered an Orphan or "abandoned" Work.

You can use the follow web sites to get information to contact you appropriate representative. I faxed, email and called my represenatives and I urge you to do the same.

Aside from whether the bill is right or wrong, it's funny if Michael Grecco sent out this grammatical train wreck.

yep, there's a lot of mis-information & fear mongering going around the forums on this subject...

Here's what the PPA has to say:

How about if you forget about Michael Grecco's lack of eloquence and instead take this issue seriously???

Image theft and bad grammar, and for that matter bad spelling, offend me. I can live with the latter. Just.
