I've been an artist for about ten years. Five of those I was a MAC artist. My kit is full of different foundations. I'm tired of carrying an entire MAC store to photo shoots. I'm not getting what I want out of any of them. I'm looking for one type of foundation, possibly in a pallette, that looks great on print and film, and is reasonable priced. Should I try Cinema Secrets? Any suggestions, please.

I love the Cinema Secrets and the RCMA pallets....I have them in my store www.camerareadycosmetics.com   If you want to check them out in person you can find them at Naimies or the Cinema Secrets store in LA.  These look great on camera...all of my work has been done with one of these 2 for years.  Joe Blasco is also good but doesnt come in pallets so you have to scoop them into an empty pallet.

I cant imagine carrying single foundations around.

Thanks Mary! I was hoping I would get a response from you. What kit # do you seem to utilize the most with CS. I can't get to LA, so I'll be buying it online.

I'm no MUA, but I love the "Pout" line of cosmetics, and have had several makeup artists use it on me for shoots and shows.

I use Cinema Secrets 5 and 3 the most but I use 4 and 6 as well.  9 or 11 to get the darker colors and mix for custom colors.....I wish they came like the RCMA 16 colors to a pallet sad

I hate MAC foundations.  They look the worst on film, in my opinion.  And forget about touch ups.

I use Tarte's Smooth Operator, Bourjois Happy Lights, Shiseido The Makeup Cream, MUFE Face & Body, Chanel, Shu Uemura Nobera, RCMA, Joe Blasco, Visiora, and Cinema Secrets, Gerda Spillman, BeneFit's Playsticks, and Bobbi Brown.

When a photographer is shooting digital, I prefer to use something light like Tarte's Smooth Operator or MakeUp Forever's F&B And Bourjois' Happy Lights if I want a glowy look and SU Nobera if more coverage is needed.  If I'm doing a commercial or film shot on HD, I prefer Shiseido's The Makeup or Shu Uemura Nobera for women and Visiora for men.  When I'm working on a film/broadcast where they are shooting film (35 or 16)I use RCMA, Joe Blasco, CS, Gerda Spillman, Chanel or Shiseido if I'm working on a female celeb, and Visiora.

I know I didn't specify for a few of the others I mentioned, but I'm running out of the house.  I noticed you are located in Dallas.  If you want to ask me more about this, message me and I'll give you my number.

Sorry, I couldn't leave without adding one more thing....

I use a Japonesque pallette and fill it with RCMA, Cinema Secrets, Joe Blasco, Gerda Spillman, Bobbi Brown, Benefit, Shu Uemura.  Not one line has a perfect foundation for every skin type and color.  That's a great way to cut down on extra weight and space in your kit.

I agree with Ashley Elizabeth. They don't look good on film. I've used them for so long only because I get an industry discount. Also, their powder and blush brushes shed worse than my Chocolate Lab. Any suggestions on better brushes would be great.

I mainly use Cinema Secrets too, never had a problem with them, Also will use RCMA and just playing with the Smashbox and so far so good. But Cinema Secrets first choice. And I agree, dont use ac at all. Think its very over rated and alot of thier products have gone down hill. You will find very lil Mac in my kit, but just my opinion

It's the heaviest, ugliest foundation I've ever used. It looks light and airy on the informercial, but in person it's gross. It makes pores look bigger and by the end of the day my face was so greasy you could fry chicken on it. I also couldn't figure out why my face was always itchy and super sensitive. I don't have sensitive skin. In doing research I discovered there was an ingredient in the foundation that alot of people are sensitive to. I can't recall the name of it...sorry...It's not on the jar either. Bismuth something or another.

As far as photography goes, I wasn't brave enough to try it on a shoot. I can't imagine it would be pretty. One of the active ingredients is Titanium Dioxide, which doesn't photograph well.

My advice is try before you buy. Go in with a bare face and apply yourself. Wear it all day and then decide.

I love Cinema Secrets. I totally agree and I would have to say I probably use 5, 6 & 7 the most thought I also use the other's that Mary's mentioned often.

I've heard some nasty stuff about mineral foundations from a MUA friend of mine who works at a Sephora. She gave me a lecture on them once. I can't recall the facts she told me, but I walked away with an understanding that most mineral foundations are crap.

I've never used MAC foundations on a shoot but I have used it myself.  I bought the full coverage once and I didn't like it at all.  I'm also not a big fan of the concealers.  I never used it again.  I've never tried their other foundations.  Which type of MAC foundation is this forum referring to?  I wanted to add the face and body foundation to my kit because another artist told me that it is perfect for print.  Has anyone used it and how is it?

Someone also mentioned that MAC brushes aren't that great either.  I wanted to purchase some.  I now use Sephora Professional brushes.  Are the Sephora brushes as good as any other or is there better out there?

Last thing, if MAC foundations aren't that great, how come so many photographers look for makeup artists that work with MAC products?

Thanks Much,
Melissa

That's a damn good question.  I use MAC and its only cos that what I was taught to use when I went to beauty school.  I have been trying to experiment with other foundations but I hear that so many are so good like how do I choose.  Since I see that CS and Camara Ready is the way to go, I might just try those!!  I just so used to the NC and NW of MAC that I'm afraid if I switch, I'll be confused.  Any suggestions on how to get over my fear of switching my foundation??

I use a lot of BECCA Cosmetics...It is an Austrailian line and I love it....The pigment in the foundations are so smooth and true to match... and the Luminous foundation is all skin. You can find them in Sephora Stores or online @ www.BECCACOSMETICS.com

I've been using Mac's Face+Body for years and mix with concealers (though not Mac's, way too greasy..) to get whatever consistency I need. I stay away from Cinema Secrets.. too much oil layer on the skin that no amount of powder will take away.  And for me it brings out every pore and wrinkle in the skin.  Not at all for me. I've been hearing raves about Shu U's foundations.. tempted to try as soon as I get my discount card.  Any reviews on it? Also, mineral makeup, stay away from in photography. WAY too much shine.  Even though the eye may not see it, the flash in photography picks up the shine and I have photographers always asking to powder/touch up.. way too much hassle in my opinion.... I'm also tempted to try Kevyn A's and Laura Mercier's foundation lines.. if only it wasn't so expensive...

great post guys!

I use CS all the time, no problem yet, however I do LOVE, LOVE, LOVE Shu's Nobara cream.  I just got a few samples and LOVE how they work.  I'm also in love with the Giorgio Armani foundation (only the illuminating).  Pricey, but nice.

I heard that Era's spray on foundation is great.  I have never used it but it's what Carmindy uses on What Not To Wear and she says that its the best foundation that she has ever used and recommends it to everyone.  I think I might try it.  If anyone has tried it, let me know if it's worth my money.

Man, with Pat McGrath as their creative director, you'd think they'd do the Professional Discount... I don't even think she's with them anymore now that she's "Global Beauty Director" for Proctor & Gamble, meaning EVERY makeup line they own...

Sigh....

It does suck that Armani does not offer a professional discount....actually, it sucks that a lot of other lines don't offer professional discounts as well, but that's another topic for another day smile

What I did with Armani was go to the counter and I just asked for samples.  They gave them to me and were VERY generous with their samples.  I later bought a few of the shades to mix.  Due to the price, I'm very particular as to when I use the product.
