What sort of paint works well for all over the body? I want something not runny, but not dry and caked on. I was imagining the consistency of tempera paint with a little water mixed in would be nice, but I figured there might be something out there that is perfect right out of the can/tube/whatever. I need a plain solid black.

Body Paint ??? .... Look for "Ben Nye" ..... Liquid Paint for Face and Body.... It's professional grade stuff & you should also make sure you get the Sealer Spray as well .....

Spray on the Sealer - let it dry - do your designs - let them dry & then hit the work again with the Sealer ....(& you might wanna do the rest of the body as well if your gonna be moving her around & for the rub-off-ness & so as to make sure that the sheen is more uniformed & conistant) .

p.s. Ben Nye as makes some of the very best liquid latex on the market.  Just beware of any kinda hairs that might end up under the Latex when it cools ..... it dries to solid rubber, which is waaaaay easy to pull off when your done but if it rolls or ends up in "tender" area's ..... well ??? .... get you camera on it's fastest settings cause your gonna get some REALLY funny candids of some pretty silly moments..... if ya feel me ??? ;-)

I guess I should have said a little more about what I wanna do... I'm not really looking for an air-brush or professional style paint job. I want my model to dip her hands into some paint wrist deep and then proceed to spread it on herself. I'm imagining this would be a terrible waste of excellent paint if I used actual "body paint" for this.

if you can't find ben nye or mehron, coloured mud work wells for some interesting effects, bwahahah, hehe

Regaurdless of how artisticly demanding your idea is or isn't you should only use skin safe products on the skin. Many liquid bodypaints can be thinned if cost is too much of an issue.
