I was curious as to what some of you do, Do you use you kit for your applying your personal daily makeup/ going out etc?

Do you use cheaper products for daily use on yourself instead?

Ive been wanting to get myself a kit, but wouldnt be able to stop myself from using it on myself!

I practice with it sometimes on myself, but for daily wear, no. Too much hassle to get it out and then clean it after and pack it back up.

bc I only do makeup for trade stuff and not for paid stuff I use all the same makeup on the models as i do on myself. I wash the brushes and all the hygenic stuff but I do use it all the same.

now, as a hairstylist I have my own personal stash vs what I use on my clientele so I would assume its the same thing for MUAs

I have basics that are for daily use, but I might dip into my shadows if I'm getting creative and have time to unpack the train case. No, I don't think what I use on myself is much cheaper than what I have in the kit. I like what I like. smile

No.... I dont.... I have my own kit for Everyday make-up that I use on myself,I still use high quality product on my own skin but I dont need to wear photo quality make-up on a daily basis.. I'm a mom so usually a little cover up and powder and i'm good to go...

i keep my personal use makeup and my kit seperate. i buy some things in duplicate (like shadow colors i love or jet set etc).  i also have a set of basic brushes that are personal use. i know that when i'm doing everyday fun makeup on myself- i am likely to be less vigilant about hygine, so keeping my stuff seperate from anything i will use on someone else just makes sense.

I used to use makeup from my kit on myself, but lately I don't have the energy to dig through my kit and sanitize it afterward.

Also, now I just wear foundation, brow powder, liner, blush and mascara most days... I have personal makeup for those items that never go in my kit.

After I get home from a job, I clean all my brushes, sanitize everything, restock disposables, and organize my kit to the way it was before I left, that way I know everything is ready for the next time and I am able to do stuff while it's fresh in my mind.  I don't want to mess that up! tongue

[uhm, did that make sense?  I think I'm the queen of comma splices!]

It's just etiquette to keep your daily kit and professional kit separate. Seriously.

It's one thing to practice a look now and again with the makeup in your kit - but your personal makeup should really not make its way into your kit.

I'll use the odd thing - maybe a particular eyeshadow.  But very rarely.  Like the others, its too much hassle to take it out, sanitise it and then put it back.

I also have my own "normal" brushes ie foundation, eyeshadow, concealer.  Don't really wear much makeup every day but when I do need to get ready (and its always rushed) at least I don't have to worry about sanitising the brushes before and after I use them or contaminating makeup as Im trying to get out the door!

Also vice versa, if a client says "oh I like that lipstick" I won't take it out of my personal collection and use it on them...

Hi Jordan, I have no doubt that you are right, but, as an outsider to the industry, I'm wondering whether you would share, with me, the reasons why this is the case.

Denise, I'll assume that this is a reply to my post. Perhaps I'm just being dense, but I still don't follow. I would have assumed that if it's possible to use makeup on different models from a sanitary perspective, it should also be possible to use the makeup personally too. I'm also not very clear about what would make it unprofessional.

Personal makeup is not sanitized between uses - glosses, mascaras, and other products come in constant direct contact with the skin. These are products that become contaminated and should not be used on another person.

True, a MUA sanitizes his products between models - but the products never become contaminated to begin with. This is a huge example of why a personal kit should stay separate from a sanitized kit designed for clients.

Aside from the skeevy bacterial perspective - using personal products on clients is bad practice in any field (it's really poor etiquette)...I'm surprised I have to explain it.

Ah, I see - I simply assumed that a MUA would follow the same hygiene practices when using makeup on him/herself, including using wands and separate cleanable brushes. Do you still think that it is bad etiquette even if those precautions are followed? I find what you said about mixing business and personal products in any field bad etiquette interesting, simply because I couldn't think of any other field in which resources are shared between clients where that is the case. For example, I use the same computer for both personal and business use. My mechanic services his car in his shop. My cleaner cleans her house with her vacuum cleaner, and my gardener uses his equipment in his own garden.

I think what everyone is trying to say is.. maybe we're not so sanitary with our personal make-up.. but very sanitary with our professional make-up.. and to mix the two would be confusing and probably not turn out well.

EDIT: also, using disposables is a pain in the ass.. it's much easier to just buy a few doubles of products we really love.

Does your doctor share his own advil? How about needles?

Does the chef at your restaurant serve you food he cooked at his home?

Does your masseuse offer you a towel that she showered with earlier that day?

Or how about your facialist? Does she use soap from her bathtub at home?

Gardening tools, vacuums, and computers don't touch your face:) We're talking about products and services that involve touching and working with the human body. If sharing makeup doesn't skeeve you out, I have no business arguing with you. We'll have to agree to disagree.

Lol, this thread took a funny turn! Maybe it's just me, but I'm sort of stingy about my own personal makeup anyway. Even if I'd used a brand new disposable lipgloss brush or mascara wand every time on my own personal stash, why would I give it out as part of my kit? It's MINE, git yer own! smile

I think the topic really took a turn...most people are saying they dont use their personal makeup on other people. I was under the impression the OP wanted to know if us MUAs used items in our professional kits on ourselves.

My personal makeup doesnt ever touch anyones but my own face. period. ever.
I have however used items out of my kit...by scraping or scooping some out, the same as I would have for a client. example-a lip tar color that I wanted to try or experiment with...a yaby shadow...a blush.

I keep my personal and professional makeup separate. Besides, it would take forever for me to go through my kit just to get a few things....too much of a hasle anyways!

for personal use i have a yaby "set empty pallete" customized with lipsticks, shadows, foundations, and blush (carry all in one pallete) + Mascara  + Embryolese cream smile

Though I rarely use makeup from my kit on myself, I follow the same sanitary procedures I would if I were using that item on anyone else.

Yeah... it took a little turn

I wasnt implying that the necessary sanitary precautions wouldnt be taken. Just seems hard to have a bunch of fantastic products and not use them yourself

Strangely enough I do not find it that hard. For me my kit is to work from, just working material. My own make-up is just my own make-up to play with.
I do not know if you are familiar with the term "sunday's clothes" ? This means the clothes you only wear on sunday (when going to church) and looking at your best and very neat. These clothes will NEVER be worn on another day in the week. For me...... my kit are sunday's clothes, NEVER to be used on my own face. You know there is a saying that says a bartender who is his own best customer is a lousy bartender. For me using my own kit on me would feel like that.

Maybe the hard part is explaining that this is a way of keeping work and private seperate.

I use a mix of different brands in my kit and a mix of different brands for me personal. I do use some products personal that will never end up in my kit, though. Because it is good for everyday use, but does not photohgraph well, for example.

Yeah, for instance most days I'll use a tinted moisturizer with as high an SPF as I can get, or maybe mix a foundation with a moisturizer. That means it probably won't photograph well, but it's good for everyday. I wouldn't spackle a full coverage look onto myself every day because it'd probably be doing my particular finnicky skin a grave disservice.

I personally smashbox the hell out of my face. I love their products and the finishes available for skin. If Im having a "light makeup" day, its primer and halo with a little chiffon blush and some mascara. If im going with full makeup its (now) camera ready, HD concealor, artificial light in flash, a light dusting of halo, chiffon blush and the kit for blue eyes (bc it makes me happy tongue), usually ending it all with gloss in aura.
Im not afraid to say, for my own face, Im a bit of a brand whore.

all that being said.... I just placed an order for a freestyle palette and a bunch of yaby products for my own use lol.

I use different products on myself than than what I use on other people.

What I wear daily is a bit of foundation, eyebrow powder, and a light wash of color on my eyes. My eyelashes have been coming out too much recently, so I'm taking it easy with the curling and mascara.

If I ever wore makeup, I'd have a kit for myself.

Maybe mascara from my purse if I'm feeling smexy.

+1, that is, when I do rock makeup.  For this past Halloween weekend, I had a Cinema Secrets palette that I kept for myself which came in handy, and any makeup I pulled from my kit gets sterilized after use.

A lot of the time, if I get a new product I like to try it out on myself if I don't have anyone to try it on with just to get a sense of how the product operates.
