The Dynalite / Comet is  some what Lighter weight compared to other pack  ring units with 20 W Led modeling lights  and units close to the  3200  w/s flash tube rating eg. ( Profoto  7 II ,5 - 6  lbs )  Also it is lighter than most other  pack units without modeling lights and  having less w/s ratings  eg ( Hensel and  Profoto, 4 lbs  or more )  . The  total weight of the  Dynalite unit   is  under 4 lbs (3 lbs/ 12 oz ) . The tripod/camera bracket  adds almost 1 ¼  lbs  to the advertised 2 ½ lbs.

One issue I had was with the supplied camera mounting ¼ “x 20  thread bolt , The Dynalite  Camera bracket  which took some time to be redesigned ( and delayed the retail availability of the ring flash  ) is dimensionally   different from the camera bracket  which ships on the Comet version . The Comet has a nice thumb/gear wheel grip on the head  of the  ¼  x 20 bolt.

The Dynalite camera bracket uses a swivel / flip D ring type grip on the bolt head, I found the size of the D ..ring and the bolts location ( sandwiched between the camera mounting plate and the  adjustable  camera depth and height rail ) make it cumbersome to attach and remove the camera with potential for a  drop accident  if not preformed  on a table surface .  The Comet bolt is too long to be used on the Dynalite plate so an alternative bolt design was researched for my use.

Dynalite’s attachments for the unit are limited compared to other manufactures.

The modeling lights are on /off switchable from the back of the unit. The two cooling fans are not switchable but are  low power draw  and do not pose a problem when  using  packs on battery power.

The included side handle on the ring housing and over all weight  makes for  easy hand hold camera use with the weight of any pro camrea and quality lenses   eg  Canon 1 Ds series cameras and L lenses .

There's a big price difference between the Alien Bee ringlight that so many seem to be pleased with and the Dynalite unit.  Can you share some of the benefits/differences that make the additional investment for the Dynalite unit a good value?
