Overall Critique

I don't really know how to critique a wardrobe stylist, sorry. However, I feel that these photos don't really help your portfolio, either because they don't show off the wardrobe well or just aren't very flattering:

Wow. Your portfolio is amazing. Seriously. The only photo I am not a fan of is this:

These are fantastic:

Lela, I have loved your work since I first saw it over a year ago, and am thrilled to have the chance to give my opinion.

You are stunning, and I think you have a lot of potential. I would love to see you cut down your portfolio to the very best, and continue adding variety to it.

Your strongest:
http://photos.modelmayhem.com/photos/110302/23/4d6f448ee10b8_m.jpg http://photos.modelmayhem.com/photos/101223/22/4d143c7325379_m.jpg http://photos.modelmayhem.com/photos/110703/20/4e11345c6870d_m.jpg http://photos.modelmayhem.com/photos/110117/00/4d33fd1641b84_m.jpg http://photos.modelmayhem.com/photos/110419/05/4dad848c7f75e_m.jpg http://photos.modelmayhem.com/photos/120206/19/4f30a14d7b9ff_m.jpg http://photos.modelmayhem.com/photos/120206/20/4f30aadf0f698_m.jpg http://photos.modelmayhem.com/photos/110328/21/4d916049501b2_m.jpg http://photos.modelmayhem.com/photos/110329/22/4d92bcd2074d0_m.jpg http://photos.modelmayhem.com/photos/110208/21/4d5226794102e_m.jpg http://photos.modelmayhem.com/photos/110307/06/4d74eafdbcda8_m.jpg http://photos.modelmayhem.com/photos/110627/22/4e096618880d7_m.jpg
And maybe this if you're looking at commercial work:
http://photos.modelmayhem.com/photos/110629/00/4e0acfa87a277_m.jpg

You have a lot of images that look the same, a lot with the top of your head cut off, and with one eye covered by hair. While that look works for you, you are absolutely stunning with the hair out of your face. Also, you have a lot of headshots. I'd love to see more full body.

What I would definitely get rid of:
http://photos.modelmayhem.com/photos/120326/23/4f716023ed974_m.jpg
Blurry and out of focus.
http://photos.modelmayhem.com/photos/111229/00/4efc21f07297f_m.jpg http://photos.modelmayhem.com/photos/111229/00/4efc21ef7e4b6_m.jpg
The lighting isn't flattering at all.
http://photos.modelmayhem.com/photos/110919/06/4e77476988ca2_m.jpg
While I like the attempt at a different pose and style for you, this doesn't match the quality of the rest of your portfolio, and doesn't show you well.

Thank you very very much!

OK, I so I am going to be updating and cutting down my bio quite a bit tonight, so you can skip that part. I have been on quite an extended hiatus, due to the passing of my mother. Before that I will admit I didn't have the opportunity to work with the best photographers. That being said, I still love many of my shots, but I am fully aware that some are just filler and need to go. I am working now on finding better quality photographers, and doing an almost complete overhaul of my port. I am interested in which, if any, of the existing shots should stay. Feel free to be as harsh as you deem necessary, I believe I can handle it. Maybe a few tears will be involved, but whatever. Lol. I need to hear the truth. Sooo, if you have time, can you please tell me which ones are worthy of staying, and which are absolutely dragging down my port. Thank you in advance!

I am sorry about your mother.

I really like these:
http://www.modelmayhem.com/portfolio/pi … 1#22380811 18+
http://www.modelmayhem.com/portfolio/pi … 0#23992070 18+

I would narrow your portfolio down to four to six photos at the moment. What you keep until you get better depends a lot on how you want to portray yourself and what kind of work you are looking to get.
With that said, this is what I think you should keep for now:
http://photos.modelmayhem.com/photos/110404/23/4d9ab0fddaabd_m.jpg http://photos.modelmayhem.com/photos/110216/00/4d5b88c05692b_m.jpg http://photos.modelmayhem.com/photos/110216/00/4d5b889fd514d_m.jpg
And maybe this:
http://www.modelmayhem.com/portfolio/pi … 7#21082987 18+
They show a good range of what you do and are the best in your port.

What to get rid of ASAP:

You tell me what you want, how detailed you want it, and how harshly you like your truth delivered. I will answer or critique as you request, but may throw in a few side comments if something catches my eye.

I know I am very new to the world of modeling and just starting to get the hang of things but i am trying to figure how where I fit in.  Where is my niche?

In other words can you point me in a direction that would be best suited for me?  Be as harsh as you want.  If its not a calling for me then let me know!

Thanks!

You are definitely great for pinup! I love the avatar.
Since you have a small portfolio (kudos for that!), I'm going to give you a general impression of every photo.
http://photos.modelmayhem.com/photos/120326/08/4f708b522bcc8_m.jpg
This is beautiful, but your belly button ring is a distraction to me. You will want to learn to be aware of things like that. Also, I tend to be wary of posting photos with my eyes closed without reason.
http://photos.modelmayhem.com/photos/120117/02/4f155464e1c2f_m.jpg
This is probably the best in your portfolio. Just be aware of what your hands are doing. See if you can find a model near you who poses her hands well, and ask her to share some pointers. I got tips from a model who ha done ballet, and have found that using the basic hand form for ballet works very well. Unfortunately, it's very hard to give pointers for this without actively showing you. If you can't find someone to show you, look at photos and figure out what looks good hand-wise and what doesn't. I would recommend a few models for you to study, but they predominately pose nude. Since you're a minor, I'm going to err on the side of paranoia and just recommend that you research it yourself.
http://photos.modelmayhem.com/photos/110325/13/4d8cfd87ea856_m.jpg
While you look pretty here, I am not at all a fan of the angle this was taken at or the cropping.
http://photos.modelmayhem.com/photos/120125/02/4f1fdc14a514e_m.jpg
This is cute, but again, I am not a fan of the cropping. Keep working with better and better photographers, and replacing what you have with higher quality work.
http://photos.modelmayhem.com/photos/111108/02/4eb908259904e_m.jpg
This is not as flattering to you as it could have been. Play around with poses like this. Try angling your elbows slightly so that they don't look so square, and perhaps cross one knee over the other.
http://photos.modelmayhem.com/photos/110628/11/4e0a1b390c0e8_m.jpg
I like your expression here, but I don't think the photo benefits your portfolio.
http://photos.modelmayhem.com/photos/111117/04/4ec4f81da0e01_m.jpg
This is cute. Did you get others from this set? If so, go back and find one where your hands weren't cropped out, and use that instead. I see that issue a lot in your portfolio, you will want to start considering it when choosing photos to display.
http://photos.modelmayhem.com/photos/100910/13/4c8a99dd4ea74_m.jpg http://photos.modelmayhem.com/photos/120306/02/4f55ea166160d_m.jpg
Simple and pretty. Nothing I can say about these that I haven't already.

You are very pretty, and have a lot of potential. The biggest issues I see in your portfolio are a lack of variety in facial expressions, and a need for better photographers. Keep upgrading to better photos as you get them!

Also, go back and look at the tips I have given other models. I have them copied and pasted into a couple of different critiques. They should help you a lot.

Thankyou very, very much for that detailed critique, I can take lots away from this! I know my facial expressions are a problem, I do need to change it up! And as for the hands, they're something I should probably think about more - I am a dancer and have done ballet for over 10 years so I should in theory be a master at it haha!

Hey there, Miss Kiwi! I'm sorry it's taken me so long to respond.

Out of the work you have in in your portfolio now, this is what I'd love to see more of:
http://photos.modelmayhem.com/photos/120211/22/4f375783d7754_m.jpg
The glamorous vintage look suits you well. I suspect you could do very well doing more work like that, especially with a dramatic noir flare. However, you would need to find some great photographers and HMUAs to work with. Many of your photos portray you with lighting and/or angles that are not flattering. It's a shame too, because I can tell that you're very pretty and could make some beautiful work if you find the right team to work with.

Hi Heather! I'm sorry it took me so long to reply.

Your look is great. You're beautiful, but beyond that you seem very good at emoting. As for your portfolio, you have a good range. Here's what I'm looking at though:

http://photos.modelmayhem.com/photos/120302/10/4f510b0f74ae1_m.jpg http://photos.modelmayhem.com/photos/111010/15/4e936c9d776a6_m.jpg http://photos.modelmayhem.com/photos/110221/16/4d630320157c5_m.jpg http://photos.modelmayhem.com/photos/110221/16/4d62fe59f24cb_m.jpg
For some reason your face is blurry in all four of the above. Regardless of their merits otherwise, they should be removed for that reason.

http://photos.modelmayhem.com/photos/110517/18/4dd324e88adfc_m.jpg http://photos.modelmayhem.com/photos/110221/16/4d62fce9ca525_m.jpg
These two appear more snapshot-y, and you have much better photos. I would recommend removing them, especially the second.

http://photos.modelmayhem.com/photos/120923/19/505fbf835191e_m.jpg
This appears to be popular, but I would rather see a different photo from the same set that isn't cropped so strangely. That is, however, personal preference.

http://photos.modelmayhem.com/photos/110701/10/4e0dff4d525c7_m.jpg
This is not too great an image, but if you're seeking glamour or latex work it might be helpful to keep until you have something better to replace it with. Maybe.

What I think your portfolio should be composed of:
http://photos.modelmayhem.com/photos/120309/10/4f5a4f754d3f3_m.jpg
This is absolutely fantastic!

http://photos.modelmayhem.com/photos/110616/17/4dfaa34811953_m.jpg http://photos.modelmayhem.com/photos/101220/23/4d10590b02f13_m.jpg
These are beautiful headshots and should definitely be kept.

http://photos.modelmayhem.com/photos/120302/09/4f510a77bdb3f_m.jpg http://photos.modelmayhem.com/photos/121004/17/506e2d8ad2f9d_m.jpg http://photos.modelmayhem.com/photos/110221/16/4d630029123c1_m.jpg http://photos.modelmayhem.com/photos/101104/14/4cd326f86f863_m.jpg
These show you well, but could be stronger. I would advise you to continue to learn and improve, and replace these photos as you begin to add more to your portfolio.

I don't know much about fitness modeling. That said, I do think you could probably do well as one judging by the fact that you have pronounced muscles. You also appear to have already begun branching out since asking this.

Now, I think your portfolio desperately needs to be trimmed down. However, since you didn't ask I won't go into what I would remove. Please let me know if I should.

These are what I think are your best photos:
http://photos.modelmayhem.com/photos/111024/05/4ea560d03484d_m.jpg http://photos.modelmayhem.com/photos/090417/22/49e964c337037_m.jpg http://photos.modelmayhem.com/photos/090308/13/49b4283572406_m.jpg http://photos.modelmayhem.com/photos/111206/18/4edec9a296527_m.jpg http://photos.modelmayhem.com/photos/110315/20/4d8032fdb1739_m.jpg http://photos.modelmayhem.com/photos/090119/20/49754d2915595_m.jpg
They are diverse, and show you and your abilities well. You could cut back your portfolio to just these without losing much.

As for what I think you are capable of doing/should do genre-wise, I'd love to see some conceptualized bodice-ripper cover type images, some moody noir work, and more artsy work like the bodypaint shot.

Hi Meghan! I have been following you for a while and think you have the chance to go far with this if you work hard.

Right off the bat upon opening your portfolio, these three lower the quality and should be removed:
http://photos.modelmayhem.com/photos/120531/22/4fc8529110af9_m.jpg http://photos.modelmayhem.com/photos/120531/22/4fc85191845f9_m.jpg http://photos.modelmayhem.com/photos/120416/20/4f8ce08fc2776_m.jpg
All three are blurry and fail to be flattering.

The second thing I notice is that these four are all too similar:
http://photos.modelmayhem.com/photos/120508/02/4fa8e68ebaa5a_m.jpg http://photos.modelmayhem.com/photos/120421/17/4f934c6d37188_m.jpg http://photos.modelmayhem.com/photos/100922/15/4c9a85ab9a518_m.jpg http://photos.modelmayhem.com/photos/100921/10/4c98ece85ec63_m.jpg
I would keep the third, and possible the second if you want to start really aiming for that type of work. Also, take a look at your hand in the first image. You should start to really pay attention to hands. I have some tips posted earlier in the thread that you might want to take a look at.

http://photos.modelmayhem.com/photos/100922/15/4c9a858f90603_m.jpg
This image is ok, but you might want to replace it with a different photo from the same set.

The two black and whites by Tony are lovely, and this is fantastic:
http://photos.modelmayhem.com/photos/120806/10/501ffa1e588ff_m.jpg
Those three give you a strong push towards commercial work. I'd  also like to see you work with him more in work closer to what's in his portfolio. You'd be great at nudes I think, but if you don't want to, do something like this:
http://photos.modelmayhem.com/photos/111211/11/4ee507bb41bcf_m.jpg

http://photos.modelmayhem.com/photos/121023/14/508710d60f33c_m.jpg
This is a lovely natural light portrait, but doesn't show you well as an avatar. I would go with this:
http://photos.modelmayhem.com/photos/120531/22/4fc8573e7527b_m.jpg
Or this if you want more work in that vein:
http://photos.modelmayhem.com/photos/120421/17/4f934c6d37188_m.jpg

Now, as for what genre you should pursue - you're at a point where between your portfolio and your look you could do anything from commercial to fetish. (Please note that I do not know what it takes to get into a commercial agency in Canada.) So it really depends on what you want to do.

I'd really like a critique. I need to know what I'm doing right, and wrong in hopes to progress. I'd like you to be completely honest, but not the mean kind of honest, the constructive kind of honest. :p I don't take offence easily. Feel free to tell me anything you think.

Do you have a question you wish someone would answer honestly, a new image you want an opinion on, or do you just want a full critique of your portfolio or bio?

You tell me what you want, how detailed you want it, and how harshly you like your truth delivered. I will answer or critique as you request, but may throw in a few side comments if something catches my eye.

I reply to this thread in sporadic bursts, so please be aware that there may be a wait.

Hi I'm new so if you would like to help me improve by criticizing my 'portfolio' I'm up for it ^^

I'm game.

Please let me a detailed critique about my bio and port.
How it comes off, if you were a photographer, would you hire me? Do I seem approachable/like able?

How is my over port? Is there anything that jumps out right away as being bad? Not fitting in (in a bad way). Is there anything in there that I should, for no reason, ever delete?

Be as brutally honest as you can.
I feel like I'm at a point now where I'm good - but I want to be better.

Hey! Sorry for not providing your distraction. sad

Anyway, um, I can't say much about your work. You are somebody who I could obviously learn from (and thanks to your Tumblr, now I am). I can't really critique you, because your work is on a different level than I feel comfortable responding to. I would say that you have more images than I prefer to see in a portfolio, and your cropping is strange compared to what I have come to expect, but your technical skills are impressive and your work is stunning. So, keep on keeping on, my good sir. smile

Hi Merry!
First off, wow. I did not expect to see such a well developed portfolio from your avatar. Secondly, I have some suggestions as to your bio, please let me know if you'd like input on that.

Now, as to your portfolio.

Clothed album:
You actually have some photos in that that I don't personally like, due to my own tastes and sense of aesthetics, but that are well done and show a very good range of your abilities. As such, I won't spend much time on that album.

These four are not as flattering as the rest of the photos in that album, and could easily be discarded:
http://photos.modelmayhem.com/photos/120731/15/50185e4da72db_m.jpg http://photos.modelmayhem.com/photos/120701/17/4ff0e5af38172_m.jpg http://photos.modelmayhem.com/photos/121009/09/5074522ceda79_m.jpg http://photos.modelmayhem.com/photos/120801/14/5019a63d0df7e_m.jpg

I love both of these:
http://photos.modelmayhem.com/photos/120424/19/4f975e9dbecea_m.jpg http://photos.modelmayhem.com/photos/120726/15/5011bf609ffd6_m.jpg
But you might want to consider only having one in your portfolio. It's better not to have repeats for the most part.

http://photos.modelmayhem.com/photos/111103/11/4eb2e2d21c838_m.jpg
This is amazing, and I think you should consider it as an avatar.

Nude album:
I must admit that I'm perplexed by the quality shift between the albums. You need to start doing more nudes and work your way up to better and better photographers.

These are the only ones that come close to showing the same energy and/or spirit as your clothed photos:
http://www.modelmayhem.com/portfolio/pi … 1#29340201 18+
http://www.modelmayhem.com/portfolio/pi … 9#30400469 18+
http://www.modelmayhem.com/portfolio/pi … 5#28475865 18+
http://www.modelmayhem.com/portfolio/pi … 3#30403443 18+
http://photos.modelmayhem.com/photos/121024/17/508888beb8cd8_m.jpg
I would narrow that album down to those five and then work on expanding it again.

My recommendation would be to contact this guy and see what it would take to get a shoot with him:
http://www.modelmayhem.com/45851
I know he's quite a ways off, but if you're ever able to make the trip to him it will be well worth your time. Other than that, keep an eye out locally and work with as many amazing people as you can. I think you have a lot of potential and could do some really great work with the right person.
Also, make Keni shoot you nude! Why has this not happened yet?

Well - I'm strange in a lot of ways actually so I will not argue the point lol.   I've also  had a hard time limiting myself where women were concerned so it is no mystery that I hang on to too many lovely images and the associated memories.  No doubt that careful pruning would improve the quality of the port though.  Perhaps, one day...

Cheers smile

I'd love to have your input on my bio as well! You've been really helpful, and you're feedback has actually been very useful. I really appreciate it, it's become pretty rare to come across someone who gives a critique that is honest, straight forward, but not harsh, condescending, or vague.

I got rid of quite a few of the images suggest, along with changing my avatar. You really made me realize how badly my port needed to be weeded out.

I definitely agree that my nude album is pretty weak. It's a new genre and experience for me that I began in the spring not long after I turned 18. So I still have a lot of learning to do.

T H Taylor work looks amazing, very good recommendation. I will really consider contacting him about a shoot and traveling his way.
Btw, Keni doesn't shoot nudes, and rarely even implied. It's sad. I've tried to convince her one or twice. sad

Anyway, thank you so much, again!

Right away this really stands out as needing to be removed:
http://photos.modelmayhem.com/photos/121029/16/508f0bf410482_m.jpg

Other than that, all of your photos need to be replaced as you get new stuff in. Not through any fault of yours though- they are almost all blurry and none show your capabilities off very well. I'm going to go through your portfolio here to show you some things to watch out for and consider in photos, and I'll let you know for each photo whether I think you should keep it for now or remove it. Also, just so you know, nothing in your portfolio needs to be marked M.

http://photos.modelmayhem.com/photos/121029/16/508f0e436eac1_m.jpg
This could have been a good headshot to show you working with another model, and could have been fairly touching and/or erotic. However, the blurriness and overexposure make it difficult to look at, as well as directing our attention to the other model. I would remove it.

http://www.modelmayhem.com/portfolio/pi … 8#30456258
This is a cute snapshot of you. There is some posing awkwardness, but that will disappear as you practice more. I suggest finding photos you like and studying the poses, paying special attention to head angles and hands. You could either keep or remove this right now.

http://www.modelmayhem.com/portfolio/pi … 8#30456236
This is my favorite image in your portfolio. It tells a story and depicts you well. It does well to show your ability to portray a character. However, something to consider in the future is the effect that what I assume is your jacket has on the photo. It creates these strangely blocked out dark spaces on your arms. Also, your left hand in this photo (the one not holding the knife) is clenched into a fist. I'm not  sure if that was purposeful as part of the story or not - either way, it doesn't quite match the rest of your body language. To fix that in the future, either create a matching body language (more tense and/or angry) or relax the hand. I would keep this image.

http://www.modelmayhem.com/portfolio/pi … 8#30456217
I have no clue what's supposed to be going on here. I don't think it's a very effective photo, and it does not show you very well. I would remove it.

http://photos.modelmayhem.com/photos/121028/08/508d4e70d991a_m.jpg
This appears to be just a crop of another photo in your portfolio. I find it a bit puzzling, but it doesn't really effect you too much either way.  I think you could either keep or remove it, but personally I would remove it.

http://www.modelmayhem.com/portfolio/pi … 8#30439075
The body language in this is awkward and uncomfortable. Your hand is in front of her face, and you appear to be contemplating murder. Sorry. I would definitely remove this.

http://photos.modelmayhem.com/photos/121028/08/508d4e29b34f9_m.jpg
This is ok, but it isn't very dynamic and it's rather blurry. You could go either way, but I would remove it.

http://www.modelmayhem.com/portfolio/pi … 8#30439064
Again, the body language in this is very awkard and uncomfortable. I would remove it.

http://photos.modelmayhem.com/photos/121028/08/508d4db914eee_m.jpg
This shows some flexibility and shows your leg pretty well. Again, you might want to look at your hands in this and examine how holding them differently might have improved the image. It is somewhat blurry, and your legs have been chopped off, so if you decide to keep it for now you should make this one of the first replaced.

http://photos.modelmayhem.com/photos/121028/08/508d49dfcc9cd_m.jpg
A bit blurry, but a good headshot for now. I would make this your avatar.

http://www.modelmayhem.com/portfolio/pi … 8#30438917
This is an ok snapshot. It doesn't do a whole lot for you though, and makes your legs look super short. I think you should keep it for now to show how you look since it is better than others, but again, replace it once you get new work.

Overall, you're very cute and, given what you have now, I think you could produce some very interesting work. I definitely think you should keep working on this, just try and find some really good photographers to collaborate with.

Hey Nicole! May I just first say that I am extremely jealous of some of your images and some of the people you have had a chance to work with? Wow.

Your bio:
Very short and to the point, it would be very helpful to me as a photographer. It mostly comes across as professional, but if I didn't know you from the forums and/or was a prude the line about your boobies might throw me off a bit (this is not to say that I don't agree with it. smile )

Your portfolio:
Overall, looking at your work as a photographer, you appear to be a competent nude model, doing mostly art nudes but dabbling in some erotic and glamour. However, you also appear to have way to many images, and would have a far stronger portfolio if you cut it back. I struggle with this a lot myself.

Some of what I think should be removed:
http://www.modelmayhem.com/portfolio/pi … 7#30479887 18+
Did Laura get any other images from this set? I love the idea of the two of you in this setting, but this photo doesn't impress me at all. sad

http://www.modelmayhem.com/portfolio/pi … 7#28829660 18+
http://www.modelmayhem.com/portfolio/pi … 3#28829663 18+
These both look far too snapshot-y. I would take them out right away.

http://www.modelmayhem.com/portfolio/pi … 1#28829661 18+
This also looks snapshot-y to me, but you look amazing in it. If you're looking to get more erotic or glamour work you *might* want to leave it until you get something similar.

http://www.modelmayhem.com/portfolio/pi … 3#29024703 18+
This is a stunning image, but it does much more for Neil than it does for you. I think the other, similar image by him is far better for you. They're close enough that I would move this one to your Tumblr - I don't think you need it in your portfolio.

http://www.modelmayhem.com/portfolio/pi … 3#29501502 18+
This also looks snapshot-y, and doesn't really do anything for you. You could easily remove it without missing anything, and I think you should.

http://www.modelmayhem.com/portfolio/pi … 1#27787651 18+
As lovely as this is, your port has far surpassed it.

http://www.modelmayhem.com/portfolio/pi … 6#29999256 18+
This, too, I think you have surpassed. It's an interesting pose but I don't think it does anything for you.

http://www.modelmayhem.com/portfolio/pi … 8#30070208 18+
This is a lovely portrait but you have much better in your portfolio now.

http://www.modelmayhem.com/portfolio/pi … 6#27242196 18+
This does nothing for your portfolio.

http://www.modelmayhem.com/portfolio/pi … 6#27014806 18+
Again, this is interesting, but I think you could remove it.

http://www.modelmayhem.com/portfolio/pi … 9#28617599 18+
This is lovely, but you're missing a hand. sad

http://www.modelmayhem.com/portfolio/pi … 0#29050040 18+
You look cold, and the pose here is just kind of awkward. I would definitely remove this.

For the most part, your posing is great. I think your next step in order to go from good to great is to focus intently on improving facial expressions and hand posing.
