Gluten free makeup
This past weekend, I was working on a client for a corporate event. As I'm prepping her face, she tells me, "oh, I only wear gluten free foundation"...after I specifically asked her when I booked with her whether she had any special requests, allergies, ect!! AHHH. Thankfully, I had a few bareMinerals in my kit and completely saved my butt. The client didn't even have celiac disease or know what it was, she only wears gluten free now because someone told her makeup with gluten is bad...which begs my frustrating question...is gluten-free makeup that important if you don't have any conditions? Oct 01 12 06:31 pm Link I can't possibly imagine how Gluten in makeup would affect anything.. unless you got REALLY REALLY hungry and had nothing but your kit to survive on. Oct 01 12 07:33 pm Link I'm a med tech when I'm not playing photographer. Celiac disease is not a true allergy and behaves very differently. Unless the gluten is being eaten, it has no effect. Skin contact will not affect the disease in any way. Unfortunately, it is often described as an allergy to make it easier to understand. We all know what an allergy is. Then people erroneously postulate that since gluten is an allergen, skin contact must be bad too. Oct 01 12 07:48 pm Link Oh good gravy. My kids and DH are allergic to gluten and wheat (yes, they are two different things). Gluten on the face is not a problem unless you have Celiac Disease or a very extreme gluten allergy. My girls, who have mild to moderate gluten allergy responses, can wear any makeup, no problem. A dancer in the ballet company I work for has severe Celiac Disease, and cannot have any contact with products containing gluten. I cannot even use brushes on her that I have used on other products, despite disinfection. She gets so sick it's not worth the risk. There are gluten free makeup companies, they are mostly mineral type makeups. Some I've tried are fairly good, but not all. I was even about to throw away my BM from my kit cause I never never never use it, I just got it for free so kept it around...but that's a whole different rant. Oct 01 12 08:44 pm Link Cover fx, Obsessive compulsive cosmetics, Korres, Hourglass and maybe Josie Maran are gluten-free. Oct 01 12 09:07 pm Link Gluten Free has become another one of those stupid american dietary fads. The other day I was at a doctors office and he had this ridiculous anti gluten video playing with an obviously staged audience. What a joke! There are people with know allergies to gluten, but many are diagnosed that way but they are really reacting to the "enrichments" that ate added to wheat. Synthetic vitamins etc... Also many medications cause sensitization to gluten of even mimic celiacs desease all by themselves. Anyway I find it funny that people are saying that gluten in makeup is bad while there are litterally thousands of toxic chemicals in makeup and even worse in nail products. check everything you use with www.cosmeticsdatabase.com Oct 01 12 09:53 pm Link Well I have seen everything now. I didn't even know there was such a thing as gluten free makeup. My sister has Celiac disease and her skin/body is just fine with using any type of makeup. For those who don't really know about the disease. They do this blood test on you and you're suppose to score between 0 - 20 for a regular adult. Once they confirm your blood test, they go into your small intestinal track and take a sample of it to make sure you have the disease. My sister has a score around a 37 and has loads of digestive problems. She's naturally skinny because of it and once we took her off gluten her whole system has bounced back. My doctor told me most people convince themselves they're allergic with out even getting the test done. Now gluten free makeup.... I mean I guess if you wanted to eat the makeup and have like a problem eating your lipstick I could see why that would be harmful. *chuckles* Now if you don't believe me about the "gluten makeup" here's a nice link to read up on. http://www.mayoclinic.com/health/celiac-disease/AN01623 Oct 02 12 12:09 am Link ThirdEyeMakeup wrote: Love CoverFx, just didn't pack it in my kit because I didn't think I'd need it. Would've rather went with that option instead of mineral powder Oct 02 12 12:33 am Link There's a form of dermatitis (dermatits herpetiformis) which is triggered by gluten, so I guess GF make-up caters to those sufferers. But for celiacs, I guess the risk of gluten in make-up comes from cross-contamination (ie they touch their face, get the gluten-makeup on their fingers, then it transfers from their fingers to their food). Oct 02 12 02:25 am Link Really? Gluten free makeup. Go figure. You learn something new everyday. I'll stick to my mineral makeup and leave it at that. Gluten free, oh brother........ R- Oct 03 12 09:30 am Link Inhaling gluten can be worse then ingesting it for some people. Putting gluten on the skin sinks into your bloodstream. It's very dangerous for some people, life threatening. If the model has no issue with gluten though, the request is a bit ridiculous if you ask me, but to each their own. Nov 05 12 08:09 pm Link I'm going to make a restaurant that serves extra gluten and peanuts. Nov 05 12 08:28 pm Link Kelli wrote: Well said. Eating in a restaurant that has GLUTEN FREE OPTIONS is an example of things becoming risky .. Wheat stays in the atmosphere for 24 hours. Nov 05 12 08:43 pm Link Is for people with an Extreme gluten allergy. Both me and my mom have celiacs &dont need it. And is also like to add- while it may sound like a "fad" and many people don't understand the true reasoning behind eating gluten free, it's becoming more popular because more people are discovering they Have celiacs& gluten allergies. My mom&i thought we were just like that &it was something genetic, until she read on celiacs. Nov 05 12 10:44 pm Link DreamOrchid wrote: Best Answer ^^ And I know because I'm a Coeliac myself! I am so extremely allergic, that just digesting something that has come in contact with wheat causes me to have a severe allergic reaction in my face. I get almost what looks like Rosaeca acne. I once put coconut oil on my skin just as I always have after I got out of the shower and noticed almost immediately that my skin was irritated, inflamed and red. I ignored it at first, just assuming it was from the hot steamy shower. But I double checked the coconut oil's container and sure enough it read MAY HAVE COME IN CONTACT WITH WHEAT:Produced in a facility that also handles. This also happens when I use any mascara with wheat protein or any other makeup containing gluten or wheat. I use to use smash box bb cream photo ready for shoots until after my allergy had came I noticed hard iritated pustules in rashy patterns all over where I had used this concealer. I was reluctant to give up all my shampoos, conditioners, face washes, and over all my whole make up box bc of this sudden allergy but unfortunately some of us can't afford to not be "trendy", so I would think twice before judging someone's precautions. In fact in a study it read that there's a chance, and I repeat, a chance not for certain but anything that touches you facial area can be absorbed up to 60% in the blood stream. I think there should be a variety of gluten free make up artists you can hire for specific models. It's not going to hurt anyone's pocket, but the buyer of this fad.
