Right now I'm using a Crown brush set (mixed in with a variety of other brushes) that I bought off Hautelook a while ago. They're not bad, but I can feel the cheapness in quality and I would like to upgrade to something nicer.

Right now, I want to just start off replacing my face brushes.  My eye brushes are working for right now, but my face brushes are where I feel that I really need to upgrade.

I was looking at the Silk line and the Revolution line from Royal and Langnickel... Anyone have any experience with these?  Suggestions on particular brands/models?

Thanks. (:

Thanks. (: I did a search before, and I read these already, they don't exactly answer my question though.

Yes, the Revolution brushes from R&L are really good and i really like the different shapes they have. The silk brushes are good too. If i were you (and if possible), i would go to a store that sells them or a trade show in order to test their softness and the amount of pressure you want for each of them. I have a silk blush brush, for example, that is very soft to the touch but will also apply blush only very subtly.

I also like bdellium brushes a lot.

And, if you have the funds, Hakuhodo is the bomb.

i have the R+L silk blenders and blush brushes which i enjoy using and i also have Pazarey boufard brushes which i had to purchase during my make up class. i only like their small fan brush and i am not impressed with their blending brush.

i bought some art brushes at my local art store which is excellent for gel liner application.

i must say my initial purchase was a small set of crown brushes and i still like the foundation brush by crown. i also like the cheap set of foundation brushes i bought at the local drug store (superdrug)by cosmopolitan.

Me too ! I have a great artist brush that I use for gel/cake liner. I bought them from hobby craft - they apply g/eyeliner like a dream with the fraction of the price of the high end brushes.

@OP For budget brushes I would recommend some of Elf's line. I haven't used crown brushes before so I can't offer you any advice on their lines but Elf have a few hidden gems on both their normal and studio line. They have recently released a small stippling brush which is similar to the small mac stippling brush. I haven't tried it myself but it looks good and has received some good reviews. (I wouldn't use it for very dry skin though because it'd probably cause some micro-exfoliation) I would recommend their flat top powder brush(Studio line).

Also for great brushes on a budget I would recommend the ecobrush set's which you can get in superdrug and boots. Their brushes are fantastic, I would recommend their powder brush especially. Their powder brush is so soft to the touch and applies wonderfully, the way it is shaped makes it easy to press'n'roll it against the skin too.

Have you ever used Real Techniques? They are fantastic brushes, especially the face brushes. Their stippling brush is amazing. They are also very affordable, I think I got the entire set online for around $50. You can get them online and I think Ulta sells them.

I have a few of these brushes in my kit, and I second the stippling brush- LOVE IT. I really like Bdellium brushes. I get them through Naimies.com. http://www.naimies.com/manufacturer/bdellium-tools

I didn't used but touched the revolution series - This are really amazing, so I think it's worth to get upgrade to this one...the handle is fab idea!

I personally got few brands now: MAC, SEPHORA-basic range, SIGMA (stippling brushes, flat powder brushes, contouring brushes) Sephora is better than MAC but worst than SIGMA. SIGMA have FAB quality! for me is best of the best.
For me real techniques are good but wound't defeat the SIGMA quality...

I got also Kabuki - slightly round round shape -  from Royal & Langnikel - Quality is amazing. very soft, gentle hair, fab for buffing & powders smile

I just worked for R&L and Revolution brushes at IMATS and i've used the Revolution brushes in my kit ever since. I definitely suggest investing in them, they all work stellar, but my favorite is the big buffer brush (I don't have my set in front of me so I don't have the model #) and my clients love how soft they are. smile

You have to own Rae Morris brushes..you will never ever go back. Google..you tube etc. I have every brush under the sun and these are the best..super soft...shaped and the range covers everything. Gossmakeupartist on u tube reviews them.
She actually designed her brushes with crown brushes, I could go on for ever..but won't.
They are the best I've used so far.

I've just got hooked on Hakuhodo brushes. Such great quality! As far as how the series are organized, ignore the handles and just buy the best price for the bristles.

10 years ago I started my personnal kit with Make Up For Ever brushes.
Still own every single one of them, they don't lose hair.

My favorite ones would be the flat e/s ones, add to that the dome ones (14s & 15s).

I so need to update my brushes! Some of mine are 10 years old!

Good thread, I dont do much for makeup anymore except for my own shoots so Im out of the loop on whats good for brushes as of late. I used to do tons of bridal and working other photographers shoots. I pass my bridal inquires to other pro artists, I save my dates for wedding photos. If Im still open a month out Ill book bridal because I wont book a wedding that late in the game. For everyone that books well in advance there are 5 last minute brides looking a month before their wedding. lol

I have become obsessed with brushes in the last year. I purchased some at IMATS NYC and many from lots of websites such as Sigma or Coastal scents and Ulta.com.  I looked for online coupon codes and BIG1 sales.

Here is a list of my favorites.

MAC 150 -  Large powder brush
MAC 138 -  Tapered face brush

Sonia Kashuk brushes - (dark curvy handle) blusher brush, flat top brush, domed multi- purpose brush, small multi-purpose brush, shader brush.

Sigma Brushes - New Synthetic Essential Kit 10 Brushes / F05 - Small Contour / F35 - Tapered Highlighter / Travel Kit - Mrs. Bunny

E.L.F. - Kabuki brush ( so soft)

Real Techniques - Powder Brush / Core Collection set/ Expert Face Brush / Setting Brush

bdellium tools - 12pc Maestro Series ( 2 sets less than $100 at IMATs 2012 NYC)

Japonesque - HD Dual Sided Brush #130

Eco Tools -Recycled Aluminum Retractable Kabuki Brush/ Bamboo Smudge Eyeliner Brush / Buffing Brush / Bamboo Bronzer Brush / 4 piece [eye] Cosmetic Set

Coastal Scents - Classic Buffer Large Synthetic / Pro Blending Fluff / Classic Pointed Precision Synthetic / Classic Detail Mini Natural/ Classic Shadow Small Synthetic / Classic Shadow Medium Synthetic / Classic Blender Pointed Natural/ Classic Angled Liner Natural/

All these were paid for with my own money and smart shopping. I also own a whole lot not worth mentioning.

Good luck smile

I like too faced brushes and smashbox. I know you can find them at Macy's and sephora or ulta. I'm not sure how the face brushes are but the eye brushes are amazing so it's worth checking out.
