So, I need makeup to make my face more bearable for myself and others to view.
o.O
However, I'm too afraid to walk up to makeup desks and ask questions, because I don't know what I want in make-up. And the make-up ladies are kind-of... intimidating.

^I wanted to buy this because I think it may work for uneven tone and acne scars...
I had something like that before from Avon but it was a bit dark.

But i'm not sure if this product is correct for my tone.
I need help. o_O

Will you help me? smile

Awe love, stop...you silly girl!    I am sorry you feel that way sad

Firstly, I strongly suggest NOT buying makeup off of the Internet as a shot in the dark!  Also, much of ebays cosmetics sold can be very outdated as well as counterfeit. MAC, smashbox and others are so easy to counterfeit because the packaging is so simple.

Now, I'm not a huge fan of MAC for professional reasons (although I am fond of their sculpt foundation and skin finish powders) but they are almost always extremely friendly, and will gladly color match you quickly or spend time with you in most cases.  honestly, Before they can even be hired they have to be happy and say hello to everyone, it's really important to the company as a whole.  So, go.  If nothing else, you will learn the type of coverage and color range you will need.  I also like Estée Lauder for women of color since they have a great array of colors to match you properly.  They don't "have to be" as friendly but if you get a nice beauty advisor, she or he could be a huge help to you.

If you are really nervous or frightened, just say that you are holiday shopping for your mom, sis or aunt and that you both have the very same skin color, texture and type.  They might question this but just assure them that has, you do.  Sometimes pretending like you are shopping for someone else can take the edge off enough to try something new smile

If you truly cannot go to the counter, go to http://www.CameraReadyCosmetics.com and search through any of these:
Rcma
Face atelier
Graftobian
Ben Nye
Just to name a few.
These are all reputable pro quality face & body makeup companies.  They are geared toward the pro community and been around for a long long time.  These products dont have the flashy packaging like counters do but the quality is all I care about in the long run anyway.
Mary a fellow MM'er is the owner of CRC and many of us order from her and her staff.  You can always call to get phone help, or email too.

I hope I've helped you enough to get you going.  Happy searching!
Dani~

Don't be scared! If it helps (and it does for me because i'm hopeless) try a make-up store with ladies that look more like you'd like to look - style, look, hair etc. I always approach the more alternative ones with crazy hair like mine, I feel less weird about asking for stuff then. smile

I found a good primer for acne scars is Benefit - Porefessional. I'm not sure if it comes in many colours, though. :

Thanks!

I was leaning toward companies that don't do animal testing. I also thought of Urban Decay...

Which store would I walk into (my local mall has Bloomingdales, Sephora, MAC, Macy's, JcPenny, etc. and the next closest has more, I suppose)?

When does Sephora (and other stores) have it's biggest sale?

I hate Sephora. I went to the one in Union Square and asked for their help, and they sold me a $45 bottle of concealer last year that looked great under their special lights, but looked absolutely horrible in daylight. What good is concealer that only works in a makeup store? It's supposed to match your skin in daylight, too. I feel like they robbed me.

Why didn't you just return it? They have a great return policy.

You have a beautiful face!

I just watched an interview with Peter Hurley....While shooting Miss Universe she mentioned how much she hates her face?!....What a shame...Self esteem is so fragile and we so quick to undervalue ourselves....Don't fall into that trap.

Good makeup is a must in any great shoot (I think). You also want to discuss your expectations with the photographer about post production and about harsh lighting on your face.
You don't need (or want) heavy freakshow post production, but every model needs a light brush when harsher lighting is used. Not a big deal.

Peace

I didn't think they would take it back after I opened it. I still have it. I never used it again but I don't have the receipt anymore.

Have you tried searching for make up artists in your area. Find one that has worked with someone of your skin color, and find something you like.

They will and they will. You won't get your money back but you should get a store credit.

To the OP: I am a woman of color and I know how hard it is to be color matched and all of the stuff that goes along with it. You shouldn't be intimidated, the goal of the artist at the counter is to sell some products to you. Get color matched and try out the product in your real life for a day or so. When you find something that works go back and purchase but try to purchase from the same person who sold it to you. You want to build a relationship of sorts with the artist. It helps the both of you in the long run. It gets easy to ask questions to someone who you've worked with and chatted with before.

Some brands that you can take a look at are:
MakeupForever
Becca
Nars
Mehron (not sold in a dept store)
Illamasqua
Estee Lauder
Graftobian (not in a dept store)
Dermablend
Fashion Fair
Face Atelier (not in a dept store)

For the items that you can't find at your local counter you can order samples from Camera Ready Cosmetics. Get three colors that are close to your skin range and play with them in the sunlight to see what works best. If you have the budget you can try and hire someone for a private lesson. Since you are in FL see if you can hire a makeup artist who will go shopping with you and put together a look for you that you can do yourself.

I saw the title of this post and had to learn how why you don't like your face, and was shocked to find a model with an extremely attractive face.
In addition, keep in mind that most photographers, including myself, rate our models based on their ability to model more than anything else. Please stop being so apologetic, and realize that you have so much to offer as a model.

Good luck... you deserve the best and I hope you receive it.

This is a terrific suggestion! And so simple here on MM!

I also think that finding an MUA in your area is a terrific suggestion. Choose well; (s)he can not only give you pointers how to make yourself up, but will recommend skincare and/or products to use for skincare and makeup and I'm sure that if you offer compensation, (s)he will go shopping with you, if you want another opinion on stuff you want to buy.

And as an addendum, I just wanted to say that I think you are absolutely gorgeous, Jessica. I don't know how it got into your head that your face isn't pretty, but when I look at you, I see a beautiful face that lights up when you smile, I see beautiful eyes and lips and nicely shaped cheekbones.

So hold your chin high, woman, we need to see more of you.

If you're ever in Prague, I want you in my makeup chair. smile

You are a stunning girl and don't let anyone tell you otherwise. I agree with the above. Find a Mua proficient with ethnic tones and let her work on your face with different products.

I would also love to work on your face. If you're ever in London or Paris then let me know! All the best :-)

I agree, Jessica. I think you are quite stunning!  Too bad we don't live closer, I would love to go with you out to purchase some makeup.

Why not bring a friend along for the process? I personally enjoy taking my friends makeup shopping and helping them out.  Places like Sephora and other cosmetic counters can be extremely intimidating, especially if you are not 100% sure what exactly you want and need, so I am quite sympathetic to the situation.

And to learn from our model here who has had a not-so-positive experience with Sephora, if you can, step outside into natural light to check out the makeup.  Most cosmetic associates will be more than understanding to allow you to do this.  And if a product is a bit more than you want to spend, just say so and they are usually great at finding a similar product at a lower price (they did just that for me a couple years ago).

Break a leg with this project! smile
