What's the normal breakdown, per photo, per hour? What do you charge? I'm just trying to test the waters here and start a conversation to better understand the market out there so I appreciate your thoughts.

Do you mean retouching or restoration of old images?

Per image, but I do retouching and not restoration.

Restoration of old dusty torn pics. I'm working on a quote and it's taking me about an hour to repair each photo. It's a lot of work so I'm leaning to charging 25-35 per pic, but not sure what everyone else is charging.

Gamma Imaging here in Chicago charges $35.00 and up per image to give you an idea, so it sounds like you are in the ball park. If I recall Wolf Camera was charging about $50.00/image here in the Chicago market.

It's subjective per the particular image, I average between $45-60 per hour with a minimum, and after 1 hour I'll bill in 20 minute increments. I've gone as high as $75 an hour for a job I'd only do if I have enough $$ incentive. Some are a real pain in the arse.

Whenver possible, I'm the one who makes the copy, not the client. If the client wants to make the copy, I give them standards to run by, and won't accept the job until I see either their copy or the original itself.

More often than not, I used a copystand rather than a scanner. Raws come in handy. wink

Most of what I work on are CDV's, tintypes, ambros or dags. I get paid 1 hour up front, and send them a proof of my progress. Further time upon their approval and added payment.

Charging $ 25-30 per image is fair for me.

Thanks, I figured based on time that 25-35 would seem fair but I also remember some film labs like Wolf or Precision charging more.
