Anyone else surprised that a freshman was voted as the Heisman winner?  I kinda thought Te'o was going to end up with the trophy.

Manziel got most of his stats against vastly inferior competition including the tough non league schedule that all SEC teams play: Sam Houston State, South Carolina State, SMU and Louisiana Tech.  He won the Heisman for one good game against quality opponent, winning vs. Alabama. He got hammered against LSU and Florida with no TD passes and three interceptions.  His only other success against ranked teams were with 300 yard passing games against Miss. State and La Tech, the 50th and 120th (out of 120) ranked passing defenses in the country.

The most deserving player finished fourth, Marquise Lee of USC who dominated his position like no other player this year.

considering the three guys on stage, no. it was a pretty weak year overall, heisman wise.

this, although he wasn't going to win, playing on a five loss team.

True, but four of SC's losses were to the BCS #1, #4, #6 and #17 teams.  The other loss was to Arizona which was a top 10 team at one point. And remember, USC doesn't play a weak-ass schedule like SEC teams such as Texas A&M.

Maybe not for Romney but it's been a very good year for Te'o.
He plays on the #1 team in the country and he won the Lombardi Award for best lineman or linebacker, the Chuck Bednarik Award as defensive player of the year, the Butkus Award for best linebacker, and the
Maxwell and Walter Camp Awards for college player of the year.

I really think that there should be two Heismans...one for offense and one for defense.
Since they almost always go to an offensive player.

Ehhh...the field was pretty weak this year but still Manziel was more hype than production. He beat Alabama yes but her also stunk up the place in several other games but it always goes to an offensive player so no huge surprise.

and there's the rub. without that win, no heisman for him. the influence that pathetic conference has over anything college football is ridiculous. i'm just shocked that the usual sec honks aren't crowing yet. even they must realize that a&m hasn't been in the conference long enough yet for that. lol

But couldn't win the biggest individual award. Kinda like Mitt.

Don't get me wrong. I like Te'o. I hope my Raiders pick him up in the draft. Super player with super character and leadership qualities.

My feeling is that Johnny Football is not as good as Oregon's Mariota, another freshman.  Oregon had a better year and is higher ranked than Texas A&M, and Mariota ran a more complex (and certainly faster paced) offense.

But Johnny had a better PR guy, and he didn't suffer from being on a west coast team (and therefore avoided the prejudice).

But that's me, an Oregon resident.

Someone at SB Nation decided to compare Manziel's number with other quarterbacks, not just those with Heisman Trophies.

He's a freshman! It remains to see how well he'll do in the 2013 season. At least, he'll face real competition during the Cotton Bowl.

But football's not an individual game. The biggest award comes on January 7 so Te'o still has a shot at that one.

"And if you see Johnny football hero in the hall
Tell him he played a great game
Tell him you like his article in the newspaper"

Nada Surf pretty much nailed that one... tongue

If football's not an individual game (I'm not saying it is), maybe we should quit giving out individual awards.

great point, especially to college athletes.
basically this [award] is a marketing tool and bargaining chip for when he enters the draft.
Just like the BCS, it's all about the all mighty dollar at the expense of the kids.

The Heisman Trophy has absolutely no bargaining power for the NFL.  How much did winning the Heisman help Eric Crouch (drafted in the 3rd round as a wide receiver) Troy Smith (drafted in the 5th round) or Jason White (undrafted free agent) in the NFL draft?

With the number of Heisman winners who were complete busts in the NFL...haha.
