Traditionally, why do women have long hair?

I know that, during times in my life when I was going through intense change and working on career and/or serious goals, I wanted my hair short. During periods of my life when I was more interested in relationships and sex, I wanted it long. I'm not sure if this is related to some underlying instinct, or just the fact that men leave me alone when my hair is short, so it's easier to focus on other things.
