Opera is my degree. I sang on the stage professionally. I do not like Wagner. Especially Der Ring.

It's a bitch to get tickets to the Bayreuth festival. Personally, I prefer Salzburg.

I'm surprised they have never done a good movie adaption of the Nibelungen saga. It could be epic like the Lord of the Rings. It's kind of sad that the Nazis have forever spoiled the Germanic cultural heritage for modern Germans. Most don't even know about the Nibelungen nor have they read it, although it's easily as significant for their culture as Beowulf is for the British or the Illiad for the Greeks.

However, I liked the Rind der Nibelungen and read it in Mittelhochdeutsch... medieval German. One of the reasons is mostly because there are no real arias for individuals. There are brief bits for singers, but nothing substantial, other than in a few operas. Plus, he's just too heavy for me. I'm the same way about Richard Strauss...too heavy, though I do like a lot of his Lieder. Especially "Zweignung."

Oh, no... the original title of this very old Germanic saga/legend is "Das Nibelungenlied" (Song of the Nibelungs) is almost 1.500 years old... EDIT: It recollects a story that is 1,500 years old, but was written down maybe only a thousand years ago.

I've found that opera doesn't translate well to the silver screen. It loses its impact without the singing. I may not like Wagner, but I think it would do his work a great disservice to turn it into a movie.

I am not talking about Wagner, but about the Nibelungen saga - of which Ring der Nibelungen is but an interpretation. It's an epic saga in its own right, much like Beowulf. If it wasn't about Germans, it would have probably already been given the Hollywood treatment. Hollywood prefers them as one thing only though: Evil Nazis. Epic Germanic heroes wouldn't go over well with the Jewish top brass in the studios.

I also wouldn't call him a genius. His leitmotifs were groundbreaking, but his predecessors were the geniuses from whom he borrowed and learned.

Yes, the saga itself would be a great screenplay.
