I took my avatar pic myself... is that a crime in this case?

The image in question fails to do justice to the subject. As a photographer you should consider that an image shot expressly to be part of a models portfolio should typically have eyes the in focus, not blowout the highlights without cause, not include odd random blotch(s) of discoloration and include skin not rendered as plasticine. The problem with the image is the photographer. The fact that the photographer was/is you is completely incidental.

Anti-Plasticine skin, non-blown out highlights et. al noted. But is it evident that it was taken with a webcam?

The issue is image quality not device used in capture. You may want to check out Sita Mae( https://www.modelmayhem.com/12528 ) she has been shooting with an I-phone ...

Do you think the image could have been good if it had been taken with a fancy DSLR camera but the same lighting effects and photo composition?

Hmm, I'll probably look back on this image in a year and laugh at my futile attempt to edit a photo after owning Photoshop for only two days. But alas, I shall not avail. Thanks for the feedback.

Thanks for the feedback. It wouldn't be unusual to take more than 6 month to photoshop a good portrait. Go to Amazon and there are a lot of good books that will give you photoshop training.

I guess the Mona Lisa wasn't painted in a day. Thanks for the tips. I've been watching YouTube tutorials, but it's hard to remember all the steps when I want to recreate it. A book would be much more helpful. Is there a particular book you recommend?
