If they're gone after you've received such a message it's almost guaranteed that they were removed from MM.

In order to have an MM account, magazine publishers have to be specially vetted (meaning they have to prove that they've got some sort of publication and are the real people behind it), and the type of account will be shown under their avatar (if it says model, photographer, or anything else they have NOT been approved as a publication and are most likely scammers).

Go to your own profile (click the My Stuff menu option) and on the right side of your profile there's a colorful button about how to detect a scam. Click that and read, read, read.

If someone offers you money or fame, it's a scam.

Let me explain. There are 10 zillion models out there and 300,000 or so here on MM, (taking a guess of course). You're not special

Anyone who swears they can get a model into any magazine is already charging their client $2000 a day and isn't scouting his / her own models.

Very very very rarely will a big time photographer even speak to the model prior to the shoot let alone ask them to work together. The magazine has a person or people to do that fior them. The photographer just shows up on the set and does what they've asked of him /her

Have you read the Avoiding Scams article?

Well...common sense should dictate that it wouldn't be a good sign...

No actual agency, magazine, designer... Pay in advance, or expect you to pay someone else involved.

How to tell a scam?

Don't ever cash a check for too much money and send the overage to a third party.

You need to be realistic.  Your profile says you have "some experience".  This makes you a target of scammers because they hope you won't recognize a scam.  The reality is that models that don't have a lot of experience are not going to be randomly picked on Model Mayhem for any type of significant work.
