I get performing at the Super Bowl...that's commercial. But the Presidential Inauguration...they couldn't have selected someone more esteemed to perform the National Anthem? A shame if that's what it takes to get the masses to be interested. Feels more like the dumbing down of our society.

I can't stand her music but I know that she is extremely popular and has been for many years.

She did a fine job at the inauguration even if she did sing with a backing track. Today at the Super Bowl press conference she proved that she is more than capable of singing the national anthem.

While she's been accused of lip-syncing what she actually did was sing with a backing track: "Beyoncé faced the music at a news conference before the Super Bowl, admitting that she sang along to a pre-recorded track when she performed the national anthem on Inauguration Day" http://www.telegraph.co.uk/news/newsvid … ation.html

I like Beyonce but I own none of her music. I have no idea what this thread is about. And I really don't care

I would think you would hear doubling. Perhaps she sang but I don't think the volume was turned up.

She claims 'it happens frequently in the music industry..' (I don't know if that is true...) but I will say this: if I pay money to hear a performer sing and they do what she does, I feel ripped off. Technically, if her 'live' singing and the backing track were of equal volume, you would hear differences in pitch, so her singing along at a lesser volume isn't a whole lot different than not singing at all. What would have been better? A true, honest performance or a sleight-of-hand; which we NEVER would have learned of by her voluntarily? Somehow, I think the President would have been fine with the former. Beyonce claiming to be a 'perfectionist' is a cop out.

I just feel like for such a dignified affair they could have made a better choice than use a pop star. Perhaps give the opportunity to a service member or someone who has selflessly contributed to the arts. Someone who would have been confident they could have performed without a backup track. "Lip syncing" on such an occasion seems sterile and fake to me. Once again, that's my opinion. Let the bashing continue :-) Edit: I realize Beyonce could have been Obama's choice and since it is his inauguration...therefore his prerogative. However even though I support him I'd still challenge him on that choice.

The R and B singers who get their start singing Gospel can usually sing. Whether you like her music or not the woman has chops.

The live performance she gave as a tribute to Tina Turner had me rolling around on the floor, what a fucking joke! Even Tina was likely thinking 'please get this fucking embarrasment off the stage'

You are correct. I am not a fan of Beyonce. Therefore I don't follow her career and accomplishments. That said I am familiar with some of her songs and have seen her live (performing with Jay-Z at APW when the Beastie Boys had to back out do to Adam “MCA” Yauch's illness)...and I have never really been impressed. I imagine because I'm not a fan I am more critical. I don't expect to be able to be able to change your opinion. Rather I respect it. I have my own. And they will simply be different.

Maybe you thought he should have selected an opera singer. He didn't want opera. He wanted Beyonce. He is in a position that he can get what he wants.
