Short Models
Personally, I love 'em. A model's height is totally irrelevant to me, and to lots of other people who are good with their cameras. --- It annoys the heck out of me when these pompous MM armchair experts rag on new models and say they are delusional for wanting to model. It seems like I read this stupid quip in the forums here about 20 times a week. Then it's parroted by others as a thoughtless knee-jerk reaction to a model's stated height. It's the people who say this as a blanket statement who are being delusional. The percentage of models over 5'10" is only a small subset of those who model. Modeling as a profession, avocation, adventure or hobby can manifest itself in many ways. If an old sack of potatoes like me can have fun modeling and snapping pictures, then I'm sure anyone who wants to can model. Carry on. I worked with a photographer here on MM and though I don't have the edited full sized photos yet from what I saw on his DSLR screen the angle that he was shooting me at made me look taller than what I am. Certainly no six foot...but taller. I understand the idea behind wanting models of all the same sample size and height for runway. But I don't understand what the issue is in print. A photographer can make a short model look taller.....and even still...some people like short. Jun 22 13 07:13 am Link As said before, I think that only becomes a debate/issue when a shorter model insists on becoming a high fashion model when they are only like 5'5'' (which is my height). Even 5'8'', which I think is still pretty tall, is sometimes STILL considered "too short" for runway. That doesn't mean shorter models can't still do fashion shows and other runway shows, but will they be high fashion? Not very likely, but it doesn't make them any less of a model. Reality one: It is much more difficult for a short model to get signed with an agency or walk the runway. Reality two: If you don't mind that, there are still plenty of things you can do. I have shot a lot of short models that I love. My assistant is only 4'5" and I shoot her all the time. They simply don't fit the clothes and designers are not going to do something special for a model, they may for a celeb but not some girl who thinks they are going to change the industry. Jun 22 13 09:49 am Link Most of the models I've shot nude, implied and in lingerie have been around 1.55m - for that kind of work, height is less important than the proportions. For fashion, height is critical as most designers' samples are made in one size only and longer, thinner legs make clothes look better. For everything else, as long as the model is fun to work with, I really don't care. Actually for most hobby-photographers, I would think shorter (proportional) models are a bonus as it's easier to 'fit' them in home-studios where the ceiling heights are typically lower than commercial studios... Plus if I really need them to 'look' taller, there's always puppet-warp... However I think it would be fair to say that probably the shortest mainstream "division 1" agency model in London is probably 5'6", but it wouldn't surprise me if there are beauty models around 5'4". There are plenty of people like Dean Johnson, around 5'6" or 5'7". If a model can not bring catwalk business to an agency, then the agency look for what else a model can bring. This is why often shorter models may have a specific or unique look, or be willing to do a certain type of work, or it's obvious to the viewer why they stand out from a crowd. Cosmetics models generally don't need to be catwalk height. Height sometimes is only an issue because there is a second model involved. Just yesterday I shot a model who was 5'10 plus had on 4 inch heels and she had to bend over so I could fix her wig when it got crooked.
