Last August I went to an open call at an agency in San Francisco, Look Model Management.

I was told to lose 1 inch an off my waist and hips (I was 26-36 back then), and then come back. The woman who measured me also said I have great bone/facial structure.

So now I'm wondering, should I go back?
Last August I wore a size 4, now I wear a 0-2 (depends on the brand). I think I'm also too old, just turned 19 today. (happy birthday to me!)

I'm not sure, because I'm currently in junior college, studying software engineering.

Any advice would be greatly appreciated.

I can't see what you have to lose, as long as you don't have to quit school to try, and it doesn't cost money you don't have (like flying to NY).  Go back and see what they say.  A college degree in software engineering is a hell of a backup plan, but it can be put off for a couple years of things really go well.

Good luck.

Give it a shot. School is great but right now in this economy, it's not like there are tons of jobs right now.  Gotta pay for college someway and save!  Go make money, take courses as you go and online and keep pushing! You gotta do all you can to make it one way or another. Relying on school alone is putting all your eggs in one basket! Use all you got and push it!

Well, they told you to come back after you lost weight and you did, so that's handled.

Regarding your age, why don't you leave that up to the agency to worry about?

As far as school goes, there are plenty of models who work and go to school, but even if you can't do both, is that really a decision you want to leave to others?

Not trying to be flippant here, I just don't see what's standing in the way of you giving it a shot if that's what you want.

+1
many agencies take models up to 22-24, though younger is always better. 19 is not too old; but don't wait much longer.
and there's no problem with going to school AND modeling...many models do that. It's not as if you will get an agent and then suddenly be booking gigs like crazy-it is super rare that that happens. so why not do both?

I don't understand why you wouldn't.  I have always liked your look.

First get some actual shooting expirience. You've got no mages to use in your portfolio.

Work on your walk.

Then, since you obviously look like a freaking great model, go to SEVERAL agencies. They are all looking for the same thing, and at the same time not looking for the same thing, so don't be deterred if one says no. smile

You are not too old.

And remember the recipe: great expression, great walk, great shoots, great personality. Never fails.

If you don't go back? You have nothing. If you do go back you might still have nothing? But then you might get a job! But there is only one way to find out!

And if you told her that you did?  What is she doing to do?  Bring out a tape measure while 1/8 of her other models flaked out for a shoot?

I don't know how it is in Europe, but agencies here typically don't want any images other than Polaroids.

That is mostly a New York thing. In LA, they generally want the models to come in packaged with a viable commercial-fashion book and collaterals ready to print.  For a NYC fashion agency, Polaroids are usually the way to go.

I stand corrected as far as LA goes, though it does appear that Look also follows the snapshot approach.  'Course, they're in SF.  wink

I know Chicago is somewhat split on the approach (except for the big ones, who want Polaroids), but I assume that's a function of the commercial market here.

In my experience, mixed race or girls with a particular look stand good chances with agencies, because they fill "gaps" in the variety of models, they don't have to be 5'10" either because they're often getting booked for a look or their face, or simply because the editorial crowd love their "less commercial" look.

Great advice...for an internet model who is trying to attract photographers as clients.

Yet absolutely ludicrous for someone who is interested in Agency representation. Agencies don't care one bit about how many "shoots" a prospective model has under her belt. Not only are they not looking at the model's portfolio of shoots with MM photographers, they are only interested in seeing the model herself via Polaroids or in person.

Please stop with this ridiculous advice, based on absolutely zero knowledge of Agency dynamics.

Work on your walk.

Don't do either of these things.

But yes - go back.

I'm either reading this wrong or this is the crappest advice I've heard.

Worry about a job when you've finished school, an education should come first regardless of the current job market.

Still go back to the agency now, but don't mistreat your education.

Depends on the agency.

A fashion agency absolutely does not care. She could go with nothing or submit with polaroids and be better off than submitting with the wrong images.

But the commercial agencies and the talent agencies in the South Florida market will just tell you to submit a commercial headshot and/ or a comp card.

Which you probably are not going to get shooting TF on MM. ( not that will get you booked anyways)

But why not go back anyways

You have your opinion, but you don't live here either. Most colleges today only want your money. Great schools are expensive, not free like some places in Europe. You can go to school and work, I did. You can't just rely on school. You have to network and make friends outside of school. Like I said and will say again, relying just on school - is putting all your eggs in one basket. I said use all you have to make it.  If that's bad advice, then maybe you need your head examined.

I love hearing education should come first. It doesn't work that way anymore. It's important but paying for it is equally important. Taking on a huge debt after graduating isn't going to help you.

Bill Gates never finished college nor did Steve Jobs. It's possible to have success without college if you have other talents and build on them.

I have nothing against school but it isn't the only way.

Thanks for the great advice, everyone.

I'll go back this July/August.

If it doesn't work out with the agency, I'll probably just freelance and go to school at the same time, and might try going to commercial agencies after I get my degree.
