Hey, I've just started getting work last year and into this year. I have a contestant for Miss Iowa that would like my prices for travelling out of state and staying with her team to do makeup.
I was asked to do it recently. It would include interviews and competitions etc. Not sure the work load but I would like to know the going rate at which I should charge her.

I've never had to charge or had the opportunity to go out of state for a competitor! Please help! Thanks

Only artists in your market can answer this... Have you consider assisting other tenured artist?  This is the tried and true way into the commercial side of the business (as opposed to retail i.e. bridal)

Have you queried for what her budget is for this service? That is the very first question I ask any new prospect I've not previously collaborated with...

That said, were you offered per diem?  I typically quote the GSA schedule Rate if the client doesn't furnish lodging/meals... same with mileage... quote the IRS Standard Mileage Rate

Additionally I have half and full day rates on my commercial web site... they are cast in stone...

Kathleen I'm going to strongly urge you to assist other tenured commercial artist before you venture into the commercial arena... competition is rather keen and if you are not adequately prepared for the challenge of managing the business aspects of being an independent contractor your journey may not be what you hoped it might...

Perceived worth is so very difficult to attain yet so easily lost... with time/tenure you come to cherish the wisdom latent within the aforementioned...
