Yes, when it's done well. And that's why every musical worth a damn has original songs written for it.

I think it's brilliant to take existing music and set a plot to it.

The album Deadicated has more than a dozen covers of Grateful Dead tunes  by a wide range of artists, some with connections to the Dead and others that are truly weird.  The strangest covers on the album are Wharf Rat by Midnight Oil and Burning Spear doing Estimated Prophet.

It's a tantalizing challenge. It's also risky. It's rarely been done right.

Mamma Mia! is, IMHO, a notable exception.

And any Nick Lowe fan will undoubtedly love a live version of "(What's So Funny 'Bout) Peace, Love & Understanding" done in 1975 with Brinsley Schwarz. big_smile

Ram is an album by Paul & Linda McCartney.

Thrillington is an album "by" Percy "Thrills" Thrillington, and is a weird cover of the entire Ram album.

Both were recorded in 1971.
The former was released during that year.
The latter was released in 1977.

Percy "Thrills" Thrillington is, as one might suspect, a pseudonym. big_smile

Lovesong - Vitamin String Quartlet (The Cure cover)

I don't remember if I posted this one and I CBF to look.

Lovesong - Snake River Conspiracy (The Cure cover)

One of the best songs of the 80s. This cover is good and super fun and challenging to dance to. It's a staple of my workouts.
