Just a heads up if you have your own domain name registered and run your own website, that a whole lot of new domain name types are now available - not just the .com and .net etc. These include .photography .photos .gallery .pictures for starters with a heap more becoming available in coming months. So if you want to register something like davidbeaver.photography then I suggest you get in now - BTW the name I just mentioned is gone - I just registered it. I did it through whois.com (that's not an advertisement just a statement of fact) for USD$20/year. Check out the list currently available - http://shop.whois.com/domain-registrati … ?view-more

I actually make part time money in the domain industry. I can assure you, these domain names are worthless. You are ---ALWAYS--- better off getting a TLD (Top Level Domain) such as a .com, .net, or .org. The .photographer" domains or the .co, .biz, .info domains are really quite worthless. There are many reasons why you don't want them but you need to understand why suckers often believe they have some value.

When a company such as Godaddy.com (the largest seller of domains in the world) tells you that you need to jump on the .photographer bandwagon, it's not because they are trying to do you some great service. They know damn well that the domain name will have no value to you whatsoever. The reason they are always dying to open up new domain markets is because the existing domain market is finite.

In other words, there is only one "johnsmith.com" domain name, so when John Smith leases it for himself (hint: you never actually own your domain name, you lease it) it is off the market for any of the millions of other people who want it because their name is John Smith too. So the one guy who grabs it in New York took it off the market from the guy who wants it in London so the guy in London gets the .net...another TLD. Now that is off the market for the guy in Miami who wants it, etc. Pretty soon, they are ALL off the market, and companies like Godaddy cannot sell any "JohnSmith" domain names to any of the other millions of John Smiths out there.

AH! But if they were to manufacture other worthless domains such as .biz, .info, .photographer, .plumber, .pilot, .tvrepairman, etc., then they can pitch these to any of the others who missed the boat the first few times around. Get it?

Trust me, you are way better off with a decent .com domain name then you ever will be with a great .photographer one.

I agree with you 100%.  Unless and until the world changes, I still look for, good old fashion, ".com's"

For a long time people are not going to understand that these names with what is to them a "strange" ending, is in fact a valid website domain name.

The .co domain name extension (some years back) was the biggest launch in top level domain name extensions and yet most people in North America still are unfamiliar with it (the country specific extensions like .co.uk are a different matter entirely).

One of the other factors in domain names is how short (and memorable) the domain names are.  Think about how long it takes to enter www.johnsmith.photography on a mobile device.

And with the domain name confusion, you also know that tons of people will try and enter www.johnsmithphotography.com instead...

I do the same, and I agree with Adam.

If we'd put the cyber-squatters in jail where they belong, top level applicable domains would be available for their intended and legitimate use.

+1000!

Middle men BS! ICANN should have applications for use, much like a business licenses and/or corporations. You don't see anyone buying up every corporation name out there ( and they would if they could!), and reselling them at huge profits.

Domain parkers/auctioneers = Scumbags

If it doesn't end in .net .org or .com, it ain't worth crap period.

Edit: Or .edu, but good luck getting one of those unless you're an accredited institution.

IMHO

@J O H N A L L A N  - I just wanted to point out that there's a distinct difference between cyber squatters and domain name investors.

I, like many others am a domain name investor. I buy legitimate domain names with the view of reselling them, or creating websites on them. That's no different to traditional old real estate. Search for Frank Schilling, Rick Schwartz and Adam Dicker for examples of successful legitimate investors.

Cyber squatters buy copyrighted/trademarked domain names with the view to making thousands of dollars from the sale of them. These people usually lose their names via the UDRP process.

But I agree - .photography, .gallery etc are mainly worthless. Stick to .com's in general!

+10

To the OP: how many times have you been asked what your dot-com is? Now, watch your reaction when you try selling people on your .photoguy address. And guess what else? You can't mask it as you.*, you.com, etcetera. Watch. .com is the way to go, always. If the addy you want is taken, think of smth creative and original.

Just my advice, OP hmm

With social media going the way it is I almost feel that in a few years or so domains will lose a little less value as far as the main portal a client will view your work through, and as search changes to more and more local results and local businesses I feel that it's less and less important to have a high level domain.

What's lost in natural SEO is gained by throwing some money at adwords, putting the business up on whatever search engine listing is (like google places), and doing other local ads.

IMO
