Networking in and out of Model Mayhem
As I am still acclimatizing to the studio photography world, I find that I lack the street savvy of networking online. I use Model Mayhem but find so many use it merely as a back-up. I also hear they use Facebook more. I have had some modicum of success on MM, but see others are so much more. I hear there are other sites people use as well. So to all models and photographers, what is your online strategy in marketing your services? I have had some modicum of success on MM, but see others are so much more. I think allot of people simply have the (incorrect) expectation that putting a profile on a site is the same as "networking". FB, MM, are meant to assist in networking, not replace networking. The best networking is still talking people....hands down. I've found that after I printed allot of business cards, and started attending events (like a local parade, or a car show) I get allot more responses. An example is a person showing a car at a car show would gladly want you to email them a photo you just took of their car, and in that same email you can put in a link your website or FB/MM page. People often complain that MM doesn't "do anything" for them, but they fail to realize that they still have to go out and truly market themselves. Apr 08 14 07:42 am Link KenBrandon wrote: Noted. Brings up a good point. Never expected to create a profile and just expect it to "work for me." I try using as a tool to contact models/retouchers/etc, but I also never decided to leave my house for the sole purpose of just making contacts like I should. Apr 08 14 07:51 am Link MM seems to be a cool place for personal and creative projects. If you want to get experimental and try some new things, or if you want to test new equipment, or a new style. Basically, things you wouldn't be doing on the clock. For me, 50% of my paid work comes from face to face interactions, 30% comes from referrals from those interactions, and the last 20% comes from the online world (website, FB, blog). Apr 09 14 05:45 am Link Just about 3 weeks ago I joined Instagram and received work from models, clothing designers, and a few other odd jobs. It was really surprised because I have a long way to go to develop my portfolio. In other words, those of you with strong portfolios should really see great things from it. Find out where your target market hangs out and then sell yourself to them. If it's models you are after, perhaps consider testing through agencies and working your way up the ladder to become a trusted and recommended source in your city. Apr 09 14 12:08 pm Link I book up 2 week long trips from MM alone. It can be very profitable, if you use it consistently, at least for models. I used to get a decent amount of work from FetLife, but it has been several years since I was active on that site. Apr 09 14 04:41 pm Link A model friend of mine recently closed down her MM account. I asked her why, and she said she was getting more attention and offers on her Instagram account.
