I need some adivce to help make my portfolio better. I know it's a little weak right now. I just need some helpful tips to get photographers interested. I'm not really interested in paid work right now which I'm trying to build up my portfolio first which is my first goal. I've been practicing on my facial expressions and body poses. So I can work at getting better.

This is very serious to me since I wanted to be a model since I was a teenager just wasn't sure how to get started back then. I wanna make this a career for myself an hopes to be good in time.Which I know modeling an getting experience with it and notice is a timely process.

So if anyone can give me some good advice it would be very much appreciated. I just hope I'm going in the right direction. Thank you for your time!!

Did you take all the white wall photos yourself?

They are very, very bad. They put focus on you stomach, and your poses sticks it out instead of sucking it in, which isn't flattering.

Your posing is a little strange and unnatural, and for a plain background there is just too much going on (blue wig, rocker looking shirt and flowered shorts?), and it feels a little too much like you're TRYING to be sexy.

But then you have these four photos that were taken in a park, maybe? They show a LOT more potential!

It looks like one or two genuine expressions there, but the problem is that you look very forced and not natural. For a shoot or two, try to not "pose" at all. Just move around naturally. Move in small increments between each shot and see if the photographer will go over the photos with you. You will quickly learn the good angles and the bad ones.

Also, it is rarely flattering to have your hips straight on to the camera. Try turning your hips to an angle and bringing your shoulders back to the camera and play around with that.

I have a thick belly from being pregnant at one time. I am working to lose weight. I am 126lb right now. My goal is to get down to 110lb to 115lb. I am new at this. So I need practice at it more. But, Thanks for the advice. I appreciate it.

Well, whether you need/ want to work on your shape or not, one of the best tools of modeling is working with what you have in the meantime! There are a great many models much bigger than yourself that rock it-- it's just about the learning process. wink

The realities of trying make it a career can be hard and the industry can be cruel...
In modeling they judge you on your look from
age
height
weight
look
everything...

My advice is to just have fun on model mayhem and take pictures..
As far as making it a career.. I have no advice other than just take pictures and don't put any pressure on your self. Don't aim higher but aim in a different direction..

Since your portfolio is pretty new, I'm just going to post some random things that have helped me with posing and expression rather than doing a critique, because it'll probably turn out slightly more helpful.

1. Practice - get in front of a camera as often as you can, but also take the time to practice expressions and poses that you like in the mirror.

2. YouTube is your friend. If you are doing your own hair and makeup on most shoots, then check out youtube tutorials for tips and tricks, but be careful who you listen to- there is junk out there as well as treasure.

3. Study - check out models you admire and study their work, not to copy their poses, but to deconstruct their movement and poise and work out what it is that attracts you to each image. Several great models run blogs and have written books too, which are great not only for basic help, but also for professionalism and buisness know-how.

4. Learn your own body. Think about it as a prop, a way to express yourself. Get comfortable with it and appreciate it. Grace and poise comes in part from confidence and a love for yourself. Activities like yoga and dance can help with this.

Hope you find something useful here, and good luck on your journey smile

Is this why you want to become a model??
"To become someone"?
You don't need to be a model to become someone. You are someone...
You should not count on modeling to make you feel that way..
Its not the right way to think.
Your motivated and driven, thats good...
Its just not realistic...

If this is true, then approach this as you would any other career. Spend as much time as it takes to become a good model. Practice your moves, spend time in front of several different photographers to learn how to interact with the various styles and personalities that are out there,  spend even more time in front of a mirror, perfect your grammar and writing skills, post accurate measurements and keep them accurate, expect to spend a significant amount of time perfecting your skills before expecting to become a well-paid model, etc., etc. There's a LOT more to modeling than many understand. It's WAY more than a possessing a young, pretty face and a nice body.

Thank you all for your input. I'll take it all into consideration. I'm going through a rough time and I think I'm just gonna practice and practice as much as it can an see where it leads me. Hopefully some where good cause this is something I always wanted to do. I'm just worried about my age cause of me being 26 most agencies like younger girls and I ain't getting any younger. I don't know. We shall see. Thanks again! smile
