Why not just move the stand?  Do you have some magic hands that can position the light in a way not possible with a regular lightstand?

Sometimes.

Sometimes I'll use a VALS to hold it highter than the stand alone allows or on breezy days.

Yup - tried that only last week. It was a bitch. Mind you I didn't really have the proper attachments. smile

I hand hold a Mini-Softbox for my 550ex flash, or have someone hold it, and move around based on where I want them to stand.  This also helps to increase/decrease the intensity for me, without fooling around with flash settings.

You could also put a light on a small jib arm, which makes flying it around a breeze.

I have found this to be the best approach:

I just let the models hold it:

Ummmmm...hmmmm....lemme think....well...in the last 40+ years...no. I move the stand and/or adjust the umbrella, reflector, model, or light source.

ROFL  :-)

It's not funny in that it probably works well, what's funny is the lengths some people will go to get the desired results. Helmet-Reflecta-Flash

I like to put lights up on obscure places, to see how they are modified or changed... not so much for strobes, only small flahses.. I find that they are too heavy and delicate to be handling like that.
