Hey All

its been a while since Ive been on here... I have been super busy with the makeup business and even quit my shitty side job in order to do it full time smile

that being said, of all the makeup related things I have done I have yet to do film... I just jumped on board for an indie film in my area. 4 actors and Im the only mua on set. They don't know I have not done film and Im not about to correct them...
I just would love any tips you guys have. I like to think I have in under control the ONLY thing Im stressing about is we will be filming in the middle of July on like 90 degree days and they cannot look sweaty....that is stumping me. Im afraid there is only so much I can do when filming outside in the sun?
also Im suspecting we will be filming at night because the director mentioned UV lighting...I know powder can look funky under that lighting so I will go super easy on the HD powder. Anything else I should be looking for?

thanks in advance!!

There are some who will tear you apart for committing to this without be honest about your inexperience. I won't join them, but I will strongly encourage you to be up front and honest so it doesn't bite you in the a** later. If this is a small time deal, a student film, etc., there isn't as much at risk. If it's bigger than that you need to consider that you need to be working FOR a key before you key yourself. Just like in print we assisted before we went out on our own. There's a ton to learn about working on a film set that is different than print.

If you're going to ignore all that and do it anyway...
Continuity is important. Take photos, make lists, keep actor bags.
Wear the most comfortable shoes you own.
There are other threads on this site that talk about keeping talent cool and un-sweaty. I and others have contributed to those threads, so you can search for those.
Talk to all your friends who have not just worked on film, but keyed. A lot.

fair enough....

I did tell the assistant director who is a friend of mine that I have not done film and he said it wasn't a big deal.... I know I should have assisted someone first but I didn't want to say no to the opportunity. Its an indie film, with a tiny budget so I said yes when they asked, thinking it could be good experience. It is not a student film.. again...they asked me, without even knowing if I do film. That being said I don't want to go in and screw everything up, I'm pretty confident in clean natural looks which is what they want. Its more of keeping it from looking sweaty and oily. The camera is a pretty standard one, I believe they said its a black magic production model so I need to know what films well and what doesnt.
we do start filming in a few weeks so its too late to take a class or anything like that.

I suppose I will continue my google search.

It's not the spy business. Being open and honest with your team members is a big plus. Otherwise not so great an idea.

Ask for them to do a make-up test. Just say you want to be sure what they have in mind and what you want to do agrees. Pick a hot day or use plenty of hot lights. If they rent, it can be the day before. Check the results on a big color corrected screen.

id HIGHLY recommend you hire an asssitant who does have some experience
if not for anything elese , whos going to watch set when you go to the bathroom , or watch the actors while your doing makeup on other actors , ect ect

you'll need to learn to break down a script , make notes
take images for continuity because they do not shoot a scene or day  in order
ahhhhhhh so much to learn

Even to be propoorly stocked for a film trailer is a whole other animal

for to help stop sweat , use a thin layer of milk of magnesia and apply the makeup over it

DONT USE HI DEF POWDER ! EVER!!!!!!!!!  its the worst period , and I dont give a shit what anyone says , its more problematic than its worth , and I do red carpet ,film and TV and commercials and music videos      ,  ive NEVER had a need for it

again I cant help but stress get someone with experience to help you
