Hey Stylists:

1. How did you get started styling, what were your VERY first steps?
2. When you are given an assignment, how do you go about getting clothes?
3. Any other tips, tricks, and advice for a beginner?

Edit: I realized that there are some very insightful post already on what you need but none on what or how to go about your very first assignment! Thanks

1.I got started in styling by assisting other stylists and I still try to assist/intern when I can.I really recommend assisting and interning as a beginner because you learn so much.

2.Sometimes I buy clothes or pull from designers and showrooms.

3.The best advice I can give is to network like crazy and if possible try interning for a fashion pr agency or showroom.

I took an unconventional route, I started styling because my sister started modeling and since I'd always been interested in fashion she asked for my help in selecting clothing for shoots.

2. When you are given an assignment, how do you go about getting clothes?

It depends on the shoot and what it calls for. I've pulled from indie designers, I've scoured thrift stores or clearance racks for finds and I've even made pieces. One of the biggest mistakes a beginner stylist can make is believing that there's only one way to get the job done.

3. Any other tips, tricks, and advice for a beginner?

Be imaginative and learn some basic sewing skills also don't be afraid to follow your gut especially in the beginning when you're likely going to be doing TF shoots that may allow for some more experimentation.
