Greetings on and all, 10 months and I find myself here searching for honest feedback on my work and emerging style. I'm self taught, learning every time I pick up a camera. Jun 29 14 07:41 pm Link Feel free to disregard everything I say, but I'll give you my impressions. First of all, dump the whole "self-taught" thing. No one cares, or if they do, it doesn't necessarily create any sort of positive impression, it just makes you look like you REALLY want people to know that. Your bio could use a little more straightforward information about what you're looking to achieve instead of flowery words about how taking pictures makes you feel. As for the photos themselves, I'd get rid of the entire top row. They're totally over exposed, not really in focus and the model looks absolutely terrified and/or faking it. The man is barely visible and doesn't add anything to the shot, except I guess you're trying to tell a story. The other three in the series… eh, not to my taste, but they're not quite as bad technically speaking. This picture could have been ok but you cut off her foot: https://www.modelmayhem.com/portfolio/pic/34489896 This is nice, I like it: https://www.modelmayhem.com/portfolio/pic/34388040 This would be better if you cropped it a little differently so that her feet don't look amputated: https://www.modelmayhem.com/portfolio/pic/34388035 Flat lighting, unflattering pose: https://www.modelmayhem.com/portfolio/pic/34256555 Really unflattering, delete: https://www.modelmayhem.com/portfolio/pic/34744877 Again with the unflattering pose: https://www.modelmayhem.com/portfolio/pic/34256514 Overall I think you have a decent eye, but pay attention to your composition and cropping to avoid the chopped off limbs. I'd rethink some of the poses you're directing your models into as well. I'm not sure how your most recent photos ended up being the worst as far as exposure goes, so you may want to revisit that, and brush up on your editing & retouching skills. Good luck! I don't know about anyone else around here but it's taken me years to get close to achieving a style I'm happy with. Also ask yourself why you're doing certain things for example... Why black and white? Jul 01 14 04:06 am Link R Matthew Kazar wrote: too many arms, hand, shoulder distractions. Shoot for mood, energy or features. Jul 06 14 09:35 am Link Work on lighting your subjects and focus on making framing with less distractions. Keep it simple. There is a lot to learn and a lot of different ways of achieving the results you may want. Pick a genre and stick to it. Try not to jump around too much.
