For some time now, I've wanted to put together a photo book of some of my work.  It wouldn't necessarily be my nudes, because I shoot a lot of other styles as well; but I have no idea where to begin.  I also don't know what to expect as far as cost to not only produce the book, as well as the cost to shoot at locations around the country.

I'm considering setting up a kickstarter page, but I'd like to hear from others about their experience(s) with crowd sourcing and/or the best way to get a book bound.

Any input is appreciated.

It's as good a place as any to start.

By "Book" do you mean a photo album or something intended for publication and profit?

There are many companies that will print photo albums.  Some use online templates, for some you download the software which allows you to work offline.   Some are text friendly, others allow little more that captions.  Creating a book yourself in something like Word or InDesign and then uploading it as a PDF to be printed is another option.

If you wish to sell your book, realize that the printing costs of most photo album printing services will create a retail price that is much higher than most books selling at retail.

If you intend to include any of your nudes, be sure the printing company will allow that.

I've printed several photo albums for personal use, as gifts or for a couple clients wanting a one-off album.   I also self-published one book and am finishing up a second - Those two things are very, very different in my opinion.

I'd like to produce a book, like a coffee table book with both photos and text.  There wouldn't be any nudes in it though.

I'm thinking about putting up a kickstarter page, but I wouldn't know how much money would be needed for the initial investment.

If it's just a few copies then go with a company like Blurb.   If you use a Mac, you can also create them with Aperture or Iphoto and have a printed copy sent to you.

What ever system you use, I find it really helps to organize your photos in folders that will represent chapters and place the photos in the aprox order you want them to appear in the book.  Makes the drag and drop process much easier.

My advice would be to make the book you want first. Assemble your images, write your prose and edit and edit again. Once you have a workable product, look around at the vanity press options out there and start getting quotes.

See what it cost to make the book you want and then you can trim and cut to make the book you can afford. Once you have your final book ready to go to press, then you can create your kickstarter/indiegogo. At this point you will know how much money you will need to print. You will know the cost of printing, you will know how much your page stock will cost, you will know how much it will take to print a single copy.

Trying to fundraise before you have a book to print is premature in my opinion there are way to many variables to consider that can blow up your cost equation and if you don't go to press because you weren't ready, you will have a bunch of unhappy backers.
