I wanted one of those really badly in 4th grade, because they were so damned cool.

My mom said no, because they were tacky and not ladylike

She was super into being ladylike and elegant.

I also got in trouble once for putting a piece of lace around my hair tie. She gave me no real explanation or rationale, but it probably had something to do with the fact Madonna was popular then, wore a lot of lacy stuff and even though I was like 8 and didn't give a crap about Madonna, my mom was old enough to be horrified by un ladylike pop cultural references.

Including ones that were totally accidental.
