I've looked this up as best I could and can't quite figure out if you need a permit in order to do a photoshoot on the beach with an elaborate lighting setup that includes multiple stands.

I understand that parks require a permit, but I can't find any information on whether if the same applies for the beach (brighton, coney island, etc etc).

If you're going to be using equipment beyond a camera and tripod, or if you're going to need exclusive use of an area (such as to set up and protect your complex lighting setup) you're probably going to need a permit and insurance. See e.g. here and here.

Yes, you need a permit. call the local PD for information where to get the required permits.

Parks and rec. has a website. The permit is cheap. If it's an elaborate set up with wires and more than one stand then yes. You don't need insurance. That's part of the permit fee...

If it's just a camera and one stand you are fine. I do it often.

^ I get that. I'm pretty sure I mentioned that in my original post.  There just isn't any specific reference to beaches.

As for shooting on the beach, I've already done it too. I've been hawk-eyed even while having no stands.

Beaches are covered in Parks and Rec. They don't mention them but it's their turf.....
