Hi everyone,

My name is Jay living in Newjersey and new to modelmayhem, playing around with this website to familiarize myself but what can be better than getting suggestions from experienced people here. So I have been applying to casting calls, posting availability notices, making announcements. However, my concern is what steps should i keep in mind or work towards getting opportunities as print/editorial model for reputed magazines who are legit because offlate i am getting lot of illeligitimate emails. Please throw some light on this or anything for that matter that could help your fellow mayhemer. Thanks in advance and btw please go through my port and leave your comments/feedbacks. Looking forward to hear back.

Cheers,
Jay

The illegetimate emails are just part of the industry.

It sounds like you are on the right path, you have to grow very thick skin, and become your own best salesman.

Hi, Jay,

Two good places to go for specific advice and assistance are The 3rd list at its new address: https://www.modelmayhem.com/po.php?thread_id=927266 where you can ask for a portfolio review (often less harsh and more helpful than you'll find in the critique forum) and/or look for a mentor in your community.  Another place to look for one-on-one help is The Big Buddy list right at the head of the Newbie Forum (https://www.modelmayhem.com/po.php?thread_id=923164).  Both are volunteer member-to-member projects conducted by the members themselves.

And of course, you should constantly review the forums, at least all the Industry forums: General Industry, Model Colloquy, Photography and Hair and Makeup.  You'll often find bits of information that answer questions you haven't even thought of yet.

And my best piece of advice is to keep your sense of humor on the ready.  It's not called the Mayhem for nothing!

I never asked, but what is the difference betwen the General industry and the other threads ?
When I have a question, I do not know where to make the thread !

Well, about humor yes.... But I read that Mayhem mean Crime, I do not see humor in Crime big_smile wink

General Industry is where we discuss the industry generally, no specific topic or focus, but relating in some way to the practice of model photography, whether as a business or as a hobby.  The Model Colloquy is where we discuss matters that relate, primarily to modeling as opposed to, say, photography which is discussed most often in the Photography forum, and so on.
At least that's the general idea.  The thing is, however, that any question or comment might relate to several disciplines so it's sometimes hard to know where to put a particular question.  So I find the best thing, if I want to start a thread, is to first search the key words in the subject (Click on search in the upper right corner) to find out if the subject has been dealt with before.  Often I find my answers there and don't have to start a new thread.  If not, I just go ahead and start my thread in whatever forum seems most appropriate.
Don't worry too much about proper placement, though.  If you guess wrong and it's important, the MODs will move the thread to the right forum.  The more you participate in the forums, the more comfortable you will become in them and the more help you will be able to be in them.

All IMHO as always, of course.

Don't ever deposit a check and then send money to a third party.  Don't ever send your bank account number or credit card number in response to an email.

As you get more experience, you will develop a "spidy sense."  If you are ever unsure, you can post a specific question here in the forums.

"Mayhem" is not interpreted to mean "crime" in the U.S.
