The reason the phrase "the blind leading the blind" exists is because there really are people out there capitalizing on that concept. In every field. No one ever suggested that they lead for free.

If religion can do it, I'm pretty sure retouchers can do it too.

Two things.

Plenty of really bad retouchers complaining about the state of the "industry".

Retouching is to a very large extent portable. This means it can be sent to countries
where the economy is very different.... where a few dollars go a very long way.
Some retouchers from remote parts of the world are very good. Not sweat shops, just people with a good monitor and an OK PC.
