I'm looking for a hotel room to use as a location. I've spent a lot of time online looking at Expedia and other travel sites, but the photos all suck and, well... most of the hotels listed are boring and vanilla-looking.

Does anyone have a suggestion for a NYC hotel location? It's not a big production so I wasn't actually planning on telling the hotel that I'm shooting. I don't need a suite, but something big enough so that I'm not forced to use an overly wide lens.

I was also considering looking on Air BnB to see what's there. Anyone ever try that route?

Thnx!

I shot some models in the Air B&B they rented while staying in NYC.

My first choice would be The Standard Hotel, which is not cheap. I've shot in The Night Hotel too.

Under $500, the rooms are going to be small by the standards of anyone not from NYC.

In terms of total cost, you may find it cheaper to shoot in Jersey City or Hoboken, even if you were to add the cost of an expensive cab ride both ways.

Thanks... that's what I figured and that's not outside of my price range, but it's got to be perfect to cough up that much $$.

Or maybe save up for the penthouse at the Night Hotel. Wow!

Thnx!

Does it have to be in NYC? If you go outside of the city it does get cheaper, if you only need it for a shoot.

The Gramercy is a beautiful location. It's money, but looks worth it.

Thnx.

OP: If you are talking in Manhattan, you are going to find a lot of disappointing results for the price tag honestly.

What is it that you are looking for in a hotel exactly?

and why Manhattan?

If you are looking to photograph in a hotel, there are other places that you could probably pay less to fly to and book to shoot at than in the city to a degree.

Another thought would be AirBnB. If you rent though, I would probably just ask the owner of the rental if it is cool if you rent their place to do a photoshoot in advance. There was a dude that rented a place somewhere in the city a while back that decided to throw a block party, and the owners place got trashed. I am sure that most should be ok with it as long as you ask. There are some rather unique places though that would be better looking than a hotel (and cheaper) though too. Might be worth a try.

Last but not least, if it does not have to be a hotel exactly, you could try rental studios/spaces in the city. I know several photographers off the top of my head that rent their spaces out, and there are several others that have fully furnished spaces too sometimes.
