I think a lot of young models do them to learn their best angles and expressions

And you have to love pro-models doing 'Duck Face' and 'Trout Pout'...NOT.

That really has little to do with it Herman ...many of these top models have legions of fans on Instagram , and Facebook - so of course they are going to want to take flattering photos of themselves

I use basically two measures when assessing the quality of an image:  the technical and the aesthetic.  Of these two, the aesthetic is far more important:  I'd rather look at an interesting low tech image than a technically perfect & boring image.

If you are looking at a model's portfolio & assessing the technical qualities of her images, you could be evaluating her photographers more than the model herself.  Selfies can be enthusiastic, fun, and spontaneous.  For a skilled photographer, a selfie can potentially tell the photographer all he needs to know.

But to each his/her own -- if you want to reject a model based on the skill of her photographers, more power to you.

BTW, in all fairness, there are people that do FANTASTIC self portraits. (My beef is with the other 98% of the self-proclaimed rock star dipshits that post incessant crap of bathroom selfies devoid of craft to support their idea of being a "model".)

Here is one person that does beautiful self portrait work. Absolutely wonderful.

Its an interesting study in how some folks want to be seen.
Cutey eyes from the dash cam for example, mwah!

My xbox thinks I want to post myself with one foot and both hands flying in the air. sure why not.

I know of at least one incredibly talented and successful photographer who uses his iPhone for some of his work (Collin J. Rae). Buuuut these models posting selfies in their portfolio are NOT Collin J. Rae wink

Like others have said, a clean, unretouched selfie is good so there are no surprises, but that's it.

A "Selfie" is  the digital equivalent of a Polaroid against white wall shot.
In other words it shows what the model actually looks like sans a production team and excessive Photoshop retouching.

I think they are ok if they are good. Or you could also do a self-portrait if you can get a remote.

Honestly I have seen selfies that blow away a lot of the photos I have seen from photographers on here. So I have no issue with a selfie if it's good.

I am amused by how many people on this thread assume that a "selfie" is a poor quality, bad image.

I have two selfies in my port and they have both gotten quite a few comments. I have them in my port because they are not retouched and I think they are better than a lot of the photos professionals have taken of me. To each his own.

Selfies are kind of my "thing." I think that taking a selfie is a way of exerting power of your image and owning your appearance. It's not about good quality; it's about making a statement. "I am here, this is what I look like, take it or leave it." etc. Idk, probably overthinking it. Also, like, I look best in mirror pics, so.

I don't mind a cell phone pic or two on a profile -- I usually request a ( recent)  cell phone pic or unretouched digital before booking a model -- especially if I was booking someone from images on MM that I can't tell how much post work that has been done to them.

That said if someone's portfolio was all selfies and claim to have been working for a long time I might question that they actually model.

The same for portfolios that are never updated.

In my mind, that's kinda the definition.  Otherwise, it's a "Self portrait."

You've been a member for 8 months.  Do you have any intention to shoot or is your mm page a selfie repository?  I'm not suggesting a page needs to be x or y but I've seen many who have only selfies and have no intention of actually ever modeling.

I think that sometimes a models phone selfies can be better at telling me what I'm looking for than some of the images from photographers she's working with on here... sometimes. But I don't want to see too many of them, or redundant, or your face at the club with friends. I want to see what you look like and get a feel of your personality. If you don't have good pics in your portfolio that show me this, then I'll take a selfie that does.

And if it's a good selfie then that tells me something too.

A selfie (selfie - singular, just the one) could work as a snapshot. To show what the model (or photographer, or MUA) look like on a regular day.

A portfolio made up of selfies makes me sad.
