No Great surprise there folks

smile

dude, one of the greatest pop voices (white) in the last thirty years hails from your neck of the woods (okay, a little east of you). she has only had one "major" hit, but just how many has kb had? none, that i can think of. she can sing circles around either kb, or sine-aid o'connor, but that's just my take.

and trying to have david gilmour (or anyone else) prove your point, is, well; pointless.

i get you're a fan...great. but saying either of those voices are the best in the last couple decades, is just an opinion, man. nothing more, nothing less. and we all know what they (opinions) are worth. tongue

Again if you had read my opening post properly I never claimed that the two had the greatest voices - I stated though that both were great singers

Clearly though I should probably have said "Singer /Songwriter " as for both the songs they have crafted are equally important as the voices in which they have used to sing them

I concur with Music Critic Ann Powers assessment of Sinead when she states that "
Sinead O'Connor connects her own life story with forces both historical and cosmic "

and as I have referred to previously - Kate Bush has been referred to as the Queen of Art Pop by Guardian Music Critic
Simon Reynolds ( see earlier link)

ah ha, more qualified backers. how refreshing. ever form your own opinions? tongue where did gilmour go?

when you 'finish later', bre sure and list all the esteemed rags and blogs that claim both of those 'singer-songwriters' are the bees knees.

meanwhile, here's the best female singer of the last three decades. singing a song she wrote.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=dTWod_l0eJA

a song--by the way--that includes three of my personal favorite elements (sorry, no magazine blurbs to confirm my likes), a great voice, pedal steel guitar, and a telecaster played on a neck pickup.

If I am going to be criticized for my tastes I think the more defendable position would be to have the support of experts on the subject than not

You will get no argument from me regarding KD Lang being great
We are from the same province (( Alberta ) and mildly regret that I didnt catch one  of her early performances in Calgary when she was on her way up

You don't actually need to defend your opinion.  The World would be one hell of a boring place if we all agreed on subjective things like art, music and foods.  My "taste" is different from yours.  It's ok!  You're letting these guys ruffle your feathers.  It's alright that you like Ms. Bush and Ms. O'Conner, but understand by posting here, you're going to get those of us who disagree.  A lot of great singers have been mentioned in your thread, but we're never going to all agree.

dude, this was the first line of your thread: "Arguably the two greatest ( White ) Female Popular Singers over the last 30 years in the West".

anyone who has disagreed--to this point--has been bombarded with critics' choices, and other musician's words. defend them on your own, or who really cares?

better yet, if someone disagrees, just eat it.

i hate musical lists, best-ofs, or opinions. music is a wholly subjective matter, until it becomes a collective matter. even then, it's never totally one or the other.

like what you like, and let others either agree...or not. don't take it personally. i was just hoping for a good sample of bc weed. tongue

and btw, a so-called 'musical expert', is neither musical, nor expert. smile it only took my until about 13 years old to figure that one out. most music experts i've personally met couldn't tell you how many notes are in a chromatic scale, or what the circle of fifths main purpose is.

anecdotal, of course, but spot on in my experience.

Hmmn who do you think are the greatest non-white singers of the last 30 years and how they compare to Kate and Sinead?

Good try but this really doesn't apply to subjective matters such as taste in music

Maybe in another thread ....

I only started this one because I was happy to see both artists making comebacks

Precisely, which is why your comment remains fallacious. It was an appeal to expert "authority" to back up something that is entirely subjective.

Its too late for me now to also get into a debate about this as I need my beauty sleep

and please remember i only said that having the support of an expert on the matter gives me a more defendable position - of course such support does not make my position absolutely true

There's nothing to "debate" on the matter, so yes... maybe some beauty sleep would be the best idea at this point. smile

That's the fallacious part (AGAIN), and YOU just indicated earlier precisely why it's fallacious:

He accused Confucius of having no free will, and Confucius says, "Name go in book".

By the way, about great female singers I like Sinead and Kate, but I'd go with Joni Mitchell.
