I was running through Craigslist as I do from time to time and I found an ad for Ripping Runways magazine:

http://washingtondc.craigslist.org/nva/ … 28154.html

Thats not unusual because these guys advertise a couple of times a week and I reply occasionally because I'm always down for a TF shoot that has a full glam team if I have the availability on my calendar. However this time it caught my eye because this ad has two pictures of mine that were never published anywhere and are marked up as magazine covers. After following their link:

http://rippingrunways.wix.com/rippingrunways#!magazine

I also found two pictures of friends of mine that this "company" never published. After speaking with the models it turns out that they all submitted work samples and then Ripping Runways is taking their work samples and using them to promote work they never published and had no involvement with as their own. I don't know if I'd go as far as to call this theft but its at least artistic fraud.

And before you ask yes I did ask them to remove the images. And first they said the model would have to request it. Once I sent the actual cease and desist they removed it, but why in gods name would it have to go that far if they know they don't have permission.

Now ladies (and I suppose gentlemen) my main question I'd ask you guys is this: If they could do for your modeling career what they say they can do why would ALL of their promotion images be from model submissions?

Stay woke y'all, don't just let people use your work to build their business with no payment or credit. And honestly even the credit ain't worth much.

You have just made a great argument in favor of large watermarks/Logos that can't be removed or ignored.

Unfortunately anyone who knows Photoshop can get rid of a watermark. The best you can hope for is to make it so time consuming that they will move on to some other photographers work that won't take so much time and effort.

You know I don't typically watermark anything because I don't mind that my work gets out there. Its not nearly the first time that I've found someone using my work without permission.

This one gets my goat because they took my picture and photos hoped it into a magazine cover. But they never published a magazine ever, let alone with that cover. It feels like they are using my pictures to defraud models and that just seems wrong.

I strongly felt like they were taking my pictures and presenting it as official work of Ripping Runways but maybe I overreacted?

If you watermark your work with a well designed logo or watermark and it is used by someone for a mag cover, then you get some free advertising.  smile

Plagiarists are thieves.  Even the copyright office looks at them as thieves.  They deserve to be treated as thieves.   Come to think of it, thieves are treated too well these days.  Maybe they should be treated as horse thieves of about 150 yrs ago.

I would argue that you just gave a good reason not to submit images to a fake magazine.....

Yeah but I didn't submit to them at all. I'm not even sure the model submitted to them as I have not got her on the phone.

There are some entities that you don't want to be affiliated with and "the free advertising" maybe detrimental to your image and your sensibilities. Anything a photographer does for "free" should be the photographer's choice not the thief's.
