Hi folks,
I've been working on an image for quite a bit of time now, all in all im happy with the image in general (still needs a bit of work but its looking pretty good), but i'm having trouble with the face. particularly skin tones. since the image is backlit the face is fairly dark and i seem to be getting a lot of different skin tones, i tried to use frequency separation to match but no dice....

So any friendly advice would be awesome

You have to dodge and burn first and try to create a texture , after just play.

How about using a gradient map and painting in the colors via a layer mask? You could sample the skin tones to be included in the gradient from different parts of the face, then finetune the colors to your liking. (I usually like to set the layer mode to "color" for this gradient. This makes it easier to work on the color without affecting the luminance values.)
