Beginning with the new-ish release of firmware for the D800/E (110) the D800 now has a little http server in the camera which permits accessing the camera from a computer or ipad.

I haven't tried this yet, but it sounds like this may give a very simple tethering solution to view images from the camera. It talks about up-to-5-users.

From what I read, that requires the UT-1 or WT-5 in order to work no?

I don't know - I don't see why it would require a wireless connection. One should be able to just use the usb cable. Then you configure the camera with an IP address.

EDIT: You may be right - on re-read of the docs, it looks like maybe at least a UT-1 is required to have the camera  talk to a TCP/IP network.

From what I gathered, it's either or, a UT-1 for direct connect or, WT-5 for wireless.
I agree, you would think, a usb connection would be all it would take, but I'm quite sure that was intentional. I'm going to sell my D800, keep my D800E and get the D810 eventually, which is still sans wireless, sadly.

You have to use the UT-1 and connect via ethernet.

It does not work just with the camera.

You have to add the WT-2 if you want WiFi.

The bios update does not really ad anything to the camera.

For a simple and effective way of wirelessly viewing images on various iPads there is a simple and inexpensive solution. It's the camranger.

That's what I use (Camranger), or direct USB tethering (which is wired and inconvenient, but far superior from a speed standpoint).
