A lot of models (and certainly some photographers) have relied a lot on Facebook for networking, PR, and getting business. FB has thrown a big monkey wrench in to it would seem. Facebook is now demanding that people use their real names on their FB accounts or they're locking them out. It's started with drag queens and gay performers (who are having to "out" themselves in order to keep their account active). Read about it here: http://www.washingtonpost.com/business/ … story.html I know of at least one very well known traveling model who's already been locked out of her account for this very reason. I think this sucks big time--it's just smart for every model (especially those that do nude or erotic work) to use a stage name. I used to use my full name on all of my photographic sites and business until a mom of one of the kids on the youth soccer team that I coached on the side noticed that "coach" was a pervert b/c he shot nekid girlies. Most of the girls who use "real sounding" names as their fake names will be okay unless someone gets a serious hair up their ass about making the models life miserable and reports her. The rest of us are kinda fucked

I have a Fan Page, personal account, and stage name account. My stage name is pretty real (I Google'd my name once and found out it's not as unique as I thought). So I'm pretty sure I'm ok. If not, I still have my fan page.

Anybody want to bet that you will be able to buy the ability to use a stage name.

Just wait until Facebook finds out that escort use their site to gain new clients. I'm sure they're using stage names as well

It would seem to me that if the need for a stage name and a networking site is important to enough people that some entity will step in to fill the void. When people begin killing their accounts to protest the things that Facebook does, if there are enough they'll listen. Until then, it's their ball and they make the rules, we choose to play by them or not.

FB is not a very good site to use for much of anything. It is a mess.

It's time for Google Plus make a run and Myspace make a come back. But the idiots at those two places are just too stupid to figure things out. All they have to do is to copy everything Facebook does minus the craps that people complain about. What so hard about that? Just shows that you could be well off and educated, and still be stupid.

What's interesting about this is that Google+ just ended their 3-year ban on pseudonyms this summer. They finally figured out that it was an unreasonable policy, and now Facebook is utterly failing to learn the lessons from Google's mistake.

Fan pages, business pages, personal pages, timelines, full blown account, tag a person, like a page, tag an image, status, whatever! Facebook is beyond my ability to comprehend. I'm too old to care.

Anybody knows the deadline? I don't want to convert if there is a chance the decision will be reversed and pen names being allowed...

As for "deadline," they've already started locking some people out. And here's the irony of it all--the model I know of who was locked out of her account, it was her real name (but she's just got a unique name). Ed

i heard on some news report yesterday that they were already unthinking this idea and unlocked some accounts.

I also read they had unlocked some accounts, but only temporarily giving them a week or two to put their real names on there. Just make the name sound real I guess, but its unfortunate that Facebook are doing that as it will affect many people negatively.

This has been in their guidelines for a long time actually. Just use a page and lock down your personal profile.

Two months ago... they forced me to convert my profile to a page... I am a freelancing photographer and painter... you can not separate me, the person, from me, the artist! After conversion, I have lost every single contact I have carefully developed over the years... I lost over 2,200 business contacts. I have lost every single post, "like", thread, comment I have ever made in my history with my FB profile (Udor Fotography). I have lost access to every group I have started, including NYC Casting Calls... and in addition... I also have lost every album I had created, many with images from client events or shoots. As a page, with your artist identity... you can not post or comment... and you don't have a newsfeed... you are extremely limited to what you can do! In my opinion... a "page" is useless (I have my websites to point people to!)... A page is nothing more than a passive "tool"...

fb pages , g+ brand pages and anything like it are not the real you. neither is a reg account where you can't be yourself. the everyone's on it is why people stick with fb for now. as soon as the users get annoyed and something smoother comes they will run just as they did with myspace. instagram was about to be that place til fb brought them.

No, my core business is referrals... but... in the industry I am in, namely fashion and runway photography, THIS is were we all network... and I am member of some closed groups with just those individuals, who are members of the international press corps on FB! I am guessing that YOU, based on your comment have your own platform*, as effective and wide spread via a platform that you have full control over... is there a "Marco R Book" I haven't heard about yet? If so, please, enlighten me, a man of the unwashed masses what your alternative to FB is! I am always willing to learn and if there is something that connects me with thousands of my peers and friends that I do not know about and gives me full control... I am more than eager to learn about it!!! * Edit: Sorry... I checked your profile... and there is no way you can imagine what I am talking about... should have checked before responding! Sorry, dude!

And when i try tag someone, FB gives me 4,000,000 possible choices, of which only 6 are visible, since it won't let me scroll down. So half the time it will not let me tag. Somebody pointed out that putting a @ in front of the name can force things to work. And it works, some times.

there are fb groups that are secret and private that only those who know each other will be invited to. unless you can come back onto fb with a name they know you buy then its hard to get into such groups. In if you only remember a few names you may can get that person to find you again to to add you back. but, your not going to find a lot of reg people setting up a wordpress with a membership pack and try to keep them going there on a daily basis

I use FB to maintain a social media profile as a photographer and artist... I post frequently... I am in contact with members and friends on different groups... and I get approached by people who hire me for gigs, because they either see my profile/comments or being referred to me via my profile, as in the recent client I just spoke about. It's networking... it works for some... it doesn't for others... in my case... it works. Not to forget that clients that are being referred to me in real life, connect and communicate via FB with me as well. One of the first things that happen in person to person meetings is that we connect via FB... if that is not Lallure's experience, that is okay... but my reality is apparently different.

I started out with a page, so I never went through it personally, but that's how I was told it worked.
As a page, with your artist identity... you can not post or comment... and you don't have a newsfeed... you are extremely limited to what you can do! You CAN post and comment. There's a little triangle menu at the top right, Use Facebook As Udor Photography. Yo DO have a newsfeed. It's not filled with your friends, it's filled with other pages that you can like or follow. Local models here have pages, and I follow them and comment all the time as my page. The one thing I think they're missing, is the ability to join a group as a page. It would be much better for me to be able to join a model group or a photography group as my page.

I've been using facebook for a while and have a regular account with a pretty obvious "stage name" named after a popular dessert. I'm well over 200 friends and i'm fine. o__O My other account for 'business' is just as unreal sounding.
