I am getting braces today and I just wondered if there is any model or extra work out there where it is okay to have braces on you're teeth? What does everyone think about this?

Speaking personally, it would make no difference to me whatsoever if you had braces or not, but, even if it did, it is more important that you take care of your teeth than worry about a few modelling gigs.

That's genuinely tough, if you are getting traditional braces.  Few people can successfully model in traditional braces. They simply distort your entire mouth too much, even when you are NOT smiling.

There are some forms of braces, that will not do that, but they aren't as effective, they can be more painful, and they actually can cost more.

You may be out of commission, as a model, for the next couple of years.

I just checked my portfolio to be sure: In most of my images, the model's teeth aren't showing. If you were old enough, a whole lot closer, and posed nude, your braces wouldn't be a problem for me.

If you need them, get it done now and you'll have a beautiful smile later.

Much of what you said is utter BS, or has a very thin modicum of truth. Particularly with talking internet modeling

The metallic braces change the contours noticeably around your mouth. If you are making significant money by modeling then get the Invisalign type braces. Invisalign gives you removable plastic trays that snap onto your teeth and you take them off when you eat or need to speak, etc.

I seriously doubt that you will lose any work as an extra because of braces.
As far as modeling… you may have an advantage.

You've gotten opposing opinions now, haven't you? Here is mine: you will still be able to find work as both an internet model and as an extra with braces.

In most fashion work, you're teeth aren't going to be showing much. I realize this is a broad sweeping generalization and there are definitely exceptions. Toward the lifestyle end you might be smiling more, so that would be an exception for instance.

Welcome to ModelMayhem!  hienvy

I assume you have gotten your braces by this time.  lease post a picture of yourself, with a big smile.  And maybe one where you are keeping your mouth closed.  Then everybody will be able to see the impact, if any.  I suspect that we will see a very beautiful young lady in your new shots.

There are photographers who will ignore any problem. I am NOT one of those. Nor should you assume anyone else is.

Either am I. If you consider braces a problem or cannot shoot around them, that's your problem.

I don't hide problems with nudity.

Braces might be a problem in some situations but so is everything else: Size of feet, how your eyes are set, etc. If you are modeling for a teenage related products, it could be a benefit. It is your confidence and poise that gets the jobs. Yes, you might lose some work because of the braces but you could actually gain some work. In some work, it will make no difference. Just practice in the mirror doing some expressions with your teeth showing and without them showing. You'll be fine.

Not a problem at all.

Remember, for every "issue" appearance wise there is a subset of clients that will pay for modeling.

I have had braces almost the whole time I have been working as a professional model. Depending on what part of the industry you want to go into it does sometimes affect your job ability. You by no means will be out of commission though!
If you are looking to do more lifestyle, it may affect you more. I have lost commercial/lifestyle jobs because people didn't like the braces. Some other people liked them on the other hand though. I have the traditional braces because my orthodontist did not recommend the Invisaline. I did however ask to get clear brackets which have saved me a lot of jobs. They aren't nearly as noticeable as the metal ones. In fashion generally people haven't cared since there is no smiling.
The braces do distort your face a little bit but the only one who that has bothered is myself since I know that my face looked better without the bump of the braces.

Hope that gives you a little insight! The braces are worth it in the end smile
