A name from an old phone book: I met Mihu Joan, Camin Haeti Nr. 7, Cam 117, Cluj, Romania when I was there in 1965 and we wrote for some time...does the name mean anything? It was rodica, Nicolae, Str. Georghiu-dej 86, Rai. Sibiu, Reg. Brasov, who told me about Sanda. And Sanda Mary Nemes has lived at Str. Karl Marx 9, Sibiu, Reg. Brasov, Romania. I stayed in Busteni with the family of Mustoto, Gheorge, Str. Soarelui Nr. 1, Busteni, Reg. Ploiesti, Romania for one night. He had two sons then, but it was so sad when he died of cancer and I could do nothing. The grandmother was Manole Elena (Lilaca), Str. Nistor Ureche Nr. 4, Busteni, and she helped with some English as she had worked with a physician. The man with the daughters in 1965 was: Anca, Pitea with domsas Ioan (14) and Mihaela (10), Str. Hasdeu *, I, Apt. 5, Cluj, Romania...and the fther was a doctor and the mother a pharmacist...say hi to the chickens! We had a great time! Armasu, Corneliu, Str. Obor 36, Campina, Romania was a professor who took me to dinner there and we wrote for years and years.

This is not a site to meet people and is about photography, but I found no better place to show possibly for the last time in my life the wonderful friends that can be made in a few days time simply driving through a new country without a map or reservation, just a love to share! No one did it so well as Romania in 1965!

I made a wonderful friend from Fagaras, Sanda Mary Nemes, in her town square in September of 1965 ("Write me please!") and we wrote for years and through her we arranged 22 penpals with my American French class. In college, I was told she had a terrible accident and was electrocuted in an elevator; a neighbor finally returned an unanswered letter with a sad note. I treasure the Atlas to Romania that she send me and so many beautifully-written letters all on a perfect, flat base line. She was so very special, as was all of Romania. I stayed with a family in Busteni high on the hill to the right, taking the father and older son to work the next morning. For Sanda, and the hard history of your land, and those suffering today, your tears are real, and shared by me now.

Don't stop experimenting with message; the youth of Romania...and many lands...has so much to say that we all must hear...and see.
