August 04, 2009 3:29pm Scarlette, coming out we cheated and rented horses, and rode out that steep eight miles (trotting all the way). it's utterly gorgeous there. for you pilgrims, havasu canyon villege is 8 miles from a road, and you get in by hiking, horse or helicopter. it's the last place in the u.s. where mail is delivered by pony express.
