About me
Please allow me to introduce myself. My name is Faye Smith and I am a makeup and hair artist trained in the UK with a VCTC qualification in fashion and photographic makeup (2008). Having always been the artistic type, achieving my highest grades in subjects such as art & design as well as design technology, it was obvious I would enjoy a makeup course. At school in England, my teacher was fantastic and truly believed in me. She even selected me out of all of the students in our class to work alongside her on an Opera Production. This gave me a tiny taste of what my career as a makeup artist could become.
I began researching universities where I could further my studies in makeup. It didn’t take long for me to make the big decision to move away from my comfortable family life in England to travel over seas to Vancouver, BC, Canada, to attend schooling at the famous, Blanche Macdonald Centre.
Travelling alone with no huge expectations, oddly, I had no fear. Aged 19 at this point, I had never lived away from home. I didn’t know what to expect but didn’t really think about it. I left on impulse which some may say is risky but what a well worth risk it turned out to be. I attended the Masters Makeup Artist Diploma at Blanche Macdonald graduating in August 2009.
The course was fantastic and gave me all the motivation I needed to pursue my dream job. The school runs a careers office providing current students and post graduates relevant volunteer positions in a range of work. I made the most of this department both during school and after graduation, regularly volunteering in order to gain as much experience as possible.
I am now well into my long career as a freelance makeup and hair artist, working in all areas of the industry from beauty, bridal, photo shoots and fashion shows to films, commercials, musical and much much more.
People always ask me what I plan on doing next. Why plan things? Plans usually never go to plan. Take each day as it comes, take whatever is offered to you and attempt everything with your biggest efforts. Follow your path.
