I am a professional photographer in New York with over twenty five years experience in commercial and portrait photography.
I have always been drawn to photograph people who do unique things and that have special skills or a passion for something. Especially things that are visually interesting. This is not only my way of coming up with subjects that appeal to me. It is a great way to get to know them and experience a little bit of their world.
Many of my portraits are environmental and much thought and discussion goes on to use their surroundings to tell something about who they are and what they do.
Of course not everybody you photograph will be somebody that works or lives in a visually exciting environment and that is a whole different challenge.
This is particularly true with corporate subjects where I try to take them out of context a little bit. Get them outdoors, maybe find some interesting architecture or something that relates to their business in some way. It may seem trite to take a real estate guy and pose
him in front of a building but sometimes that’s going to tell the best story.
Some of my work also includes the use of professional models and this is always a real luxury. They are professional for a reason they know exactly how to convey what you need for the camera. Occasionally, projects will call for people to model who are not professional. This is sometimes a challenge but more often then not I am able to get people comfortable enough with the process to perform well and end up with great shots.
