I graduated from The University of Virginia with a masters degree in Environmental Science. Instead of pursuing opportunities that I had in academia, I decided that (at least for a while) it was time for a change. Well, what then? I loved climbing/mountaineering. I could get a job in Estes Park, the Tetons, or at Seneca Rocks working for a guide service. But as a long term career this did not feel quite right.


What about photography? My dad took photos, developed and printed his own work. (http://blog.jacksonsmith.com/2014/12/27/photos-my-dad-took-8/) When I left home the darkroom equipment came with me and I had used it. I loved taking photos.


So, that was going to be it. I would be a photographer. Over the next year I apprenticed with Robert Llewellyn (much of my time was spent maintaining his property, but I got to go on most of his stock shoots). I spent all my money on film and a trip to Costa Rica to build a portfolio (http://blog.jacksonsmith.com/2014/12/28/my-first-assignment-costa-rica/). And, shot my first assignment.


Since then I have been an active commercial photographer. In the last few years my primary focus has been to create compelling portraits of individuals in their personal and work environments. I love being on set working with crew, creatives, clients, and the subjects to make quality images.
