I live in Arizona and have studied figure sculpture at schools and workshops in the U.S. and Mexico. I spend additional time each year in Boston and Portland, Maine. I work in clay, which may be fired to terracotta or cast in bronze. My practice usually involves working with a model for four or five 3-hour sessions. The poses themselves can come from anywhere: a magazine photo, a dance performance, my imagination, or the model and me working together. My sculptures celebrate the human body's infinite variety of curves and volumes, unexpected transitions, intriguing shadows, and dramatic tensions. Unlike some contemporary art, they are not statements about social or political issues, and they avoid cuteness and sentimentality.
