About Me

Birthplace: Portland, Oregon, moved to Atlanta 1967. Opened current studio in Marietta 1978. MFA: Georgia State University, BFA: Atlanta College of Art.
Taught sculpture Atlanta College of Art, University of Georgia Studies Abroad Program in Italy, South Karelia Polytechnic in Finland, Georgia State University Perimeter College, where I am also Gallery Director..
My purpose as an artist is to produce a tangible physical presence (an object) where only a vague subjective concept existed in (my) thoughts.
The subjective concept is often elusive, obscured by its own nature: images and sensations from all the waking hours are mixed into a jumble of urges, aspirations, and fears - transformed by my unconscious mind - waiting to be revealed and defined.
The subject is by nature undefined until it is made material - and material is the stuff of sculpture.
I do not so much design the sculpture as I discover it.
When I begin working, I don't know what the sculpture will be like or its' full meaning - I just know what elements are working or not.
When working from models I usually concentrate on details of the form — sometimes the face, but more often it is specific conjunctions of the form. Only after the work has been fired or cast into hard material (ceramic/bronze/glass/resin) does it become a working piece of sculpture, usually with the addition of other materials.
